Ethics In Electrical and Computer Engineering

LECTURE #10
Summary:

Unprofessional behavior in the Workplace:

Their unprofessional conduct starts to interfere with other workers

performance and worst; it can destroy ideal relationships established by
employers and employee. Any behavior or conduct that adversely affects
the ideal functioning of teams is considered to be unprofessional. The
common unprofessional conducts in the workplace are as
follows:Intimidation or bullying, Sexual harassment., Rude and loud
comments, Offensive and abusive language, Persistent lateness in
joining activities and attending meetings without valid and reasonable
cause, Vexatious litigation, retribution, and violent threats, Passive
aggression like refusal of performing assigned task, Demands for special
attention and treatment, Uncooperative behavior during regular
activities, Unwillingness to talk about issues and concerns with
colleagues in respectful and cordial manner, Excessive criticisms.

Women’s issues:

Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment is a display of power and

aggression through sexual means. Accordingly, it has appropriately been
called “dominance eroticized.” sexual harassment constitutes an
infringement of one’s autonomy to make free decisions concerning
one’s body. But whether or not coercion and manipulation are used, it is
an assault on the victim’s dignity. In abusing sexuality, such harassment
degrades people on the basis of a biological and social trait central to
their sense of personhood.

Discrimination: Perhaps nothing is more demeaning than to be

discounted because of one’s sex, race, skin color, age, or political or
religious outlook. These aspects of biological makeup and basic
conviction lie at the heart of self identity and self respect. Such
discrimination are morally unjustified treatment of people on arbitrary or
irrelevant grounds, it is especially pernicious within the work
environment, for work is itself fundamental to a person’s self image.
Accordingly, human rights to fair and decent treatment at the workplace
and in job training are vitally important.

Preferential hiring:
Usually this is giving a preference or advantage to a
member of a group that in the past was denied equal treatment, in
particular, women and minorities. The weak form of preferential
treatment consists in hiring a woman or a member of a minority over an
equally qualified white male. The strong form, by contrast, consists in
giving preference to women or minorities over better-qualified white
males.
