What is adverb?
• Adverb berasal dari add (menambah) dan verb (kata kerja), sehingga
mempunyai pengertian menambahkan arti pada kata kerja. Tetapi dalam
perkembangannya adverb tidak hanya berfungsi menerangkan kata kerja,
tetapi juga bisa untuk menerangkan jenis kata lain. (Imam Baehaqi, 2009:
180)
Types of adverb
• Adverb of manner
• Adverb of place
• Adverb of time
• Adverb of frequency
• Adverb of degree
• Adverb of sentence
Adverb of Manner
• To explain how something is done.
• Most adverbs of manner end in –ly.
• The adverbs that end in –ly are formed from adjectives.
Example:
He is a swift runner. He runs swiftly.
Fanny is a bad dancer. Fanny dances badly.
She is a good swimmer. She swims well.
Adverb of Place
• To explain where something is done.
• Usually used to answer “where” question.
E.g: I will go overseas tomorrow.
► Where will you go tomorrow?
• You also frequently use the following adverbs that tell where: here, there,
above, in, out, up.
E.g: I met him there.
Warning!!
Some words that end in ly are not adverbs. Some adjectives end in ly too.
For Example:
1. Sam was feeling very lonely.
2. She was wearing a lovely dress.
3. It was a very lively party.
Adverb of Time
• To explain when something is done.
• Used to answer question WHEN, WHAT TIME, DAY, DATE.
e.g: When did she come here? ► She came here yesterday.
• You often use the following adverbs: tomorrow, yesterday, now, soon, on
Sunday(s), at the moment, this morning, ect…
e.g: I will go to your house tomorrow.
Adverb of Frequency
• To explain how often/how many times something is done.
• Use the following adverbs: often, always, never, almost never, everyday,
sometimes, once, twice, three times, ect…
E.g:
1. How many time does Fanny take a bath? ► She takes a bath once a day.
2. How often does she review the lesson at home? ► She always reviews the
lesson at home.
Adverb of Degree
• To explain how much, in what degree or what extent something is done.
• To answer question in what degree, but it’s seldom used. Usually use
HOW.
e.g:
How did she answer the question? ► she answered very correctly.
• Use this following adverbs: too, very, rather, enough, almost, a bit, nearly, ect…
Adverb of Sentence
• To explain the whole sentence, and placed at the beginning of a sentence.
Karena menerangkan 1 kalimat, maka tidak bisa digunakan jenis kata khusus.
e.g:
1. Perhaps, she does not understand what you said.
2. In fact, English is not so difficult.
Use the following adverbs: at last, perhaps, fortunately, unfortunately, actually, on the
contrary, as a whole, ect….
Adverbs of Reason/ Purpose
• The adverb which tells about a reason is called adverb of reason.
• To express the reason for or purpose of an action.

 He is hence unable to refute the charge.

 He therefore left school.
• Jenis-jenis adverb diatas bisa digunakan dalam satu kalimat secara bersamaan.
• Fungsinya adalah untuk menjelaskan adverb lain.
• Example: In fact, I always practice my English very seriously at home
everyday.
In fact → adverb of Sentence
Very → adverb of Degree
Always → adverb of Frequency
Seriously → adverb of Manner
At home → adverb of Place
Everyday → adverb of Time.
placement of Adverbs

• Adverbs modifying verbs can usually be moved around in a sentence w/out changing
the meaning.
1. Before verb
Ex: The car immediately stopped.
2. After verb.
Ex: The car stopped immediately.
• Adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs belong right in the front of the words they
modify.
1. Before adjective.
Ex: That’s an extremely dangerous corner for bicycle riders.
2. Before adverb
Ex: The car turned the corner really quickly.
