EBOLA is a virus that causes severe

bleeding, organ failure and can even lead

to death

Most Affected Countries: Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone

 First Reporting : January 24, 2014
 WHO declaration : March 23, 2014
 PHEIC : August 8, 2014
 Crisis End : June 2016

 28,600 cases and 11,325 deaths

 21 Days to show symptoms and Virus can transmit during
this Incubation Period 2
 It took 3 months to confirm the EBOLA Case in Guinea
 Governments didn’t ask for aid until the crisis was out of
control
 Leaders were not ready to admit that they failed to handle
the outbreak
 WHO’s involvement was late due to lack of resources
 Once WHO intervened, it managed to restrict the
outbreak to only the 3 countries
 Ebola illustrates gaps in the system
 Medical NATO has been pitched by Jack Chow for future
readiness as Nations can't rely on Non Profits
3
 WHO, 3 National Governments, CDC, International
Community
 Full responsibility was not taken by any, so rapid
response got delayed
 Many solutions were proposed, taking time to
implement one
 There was no centralized coordination.
CDC had setup Incident Management System later in the process

4
 Coordinated communication is very important during a
crisis
 During the outbreak, the governments were ineffective in
communicating with citizens
 Citizens didn’t trust the foreigners in the country
 Due to this, they didn’t report the illness
 Escalated the outbreak because of this issue

 Lack of reliable data on the spread of virus was a big

challenge
 CDS helped to improve surveillance and to report data
 This data was helpful in decision making

 Local traditions were cause of the issue

 Best way to handle the dead is to bury
 But Local tradition is to cremate, which increased the risk of spread
5
 Governments and Leaders should put personal intentions aside
and take decisions for the greater good of the people
 Too many stakeholders involved in decision making process
will decrease efficiency.
 Although multiple stakeholders gives higher diversity, in
emergency situations, it’s good to restrict number of stakeholders to
a minimum
 Communication is very important between all the stakeholders
to implement the plan effectively.
