Reading

Read the text and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false) or DS (doesn’t say).

Albert Einstein - the Hidden Genius

Albert Einstein is a famous name in the world of physics today. However, this was not
always the case. In fact, he failed many times before he became famous for his brains.
Einstein was born in 1879 in Ulm, Germany. Compared to other children, he learnt
things very slowly. He could not speak at the age of 4 or read until he was 7. When he
eventually spoke, he was very slow and his parents were worried that he was just not as
smart as other children his age. Of course, we now know that they didn’t have anything to
worry about!
At the age of five, his father showed him a compass. He was amazed by how the
needle always pointed north and guessed that there was a special ‘pull’ that people could not
see. After this, he had a huge interest in science. Although he did well in science and
mathematics, throughout school he was an ‘average’ student. In fact, he even failed his first
exam to get into university, because of his bad grades in history, languages and geography.
Despite all this, Einstein went on to become one of the most important men in physics.
He won many awards for his research, including the most impressive of them all, the Nobel
Prize in Physics in 1921.

1 People did not always think Einstein was clever. DS

2 Einstein could speak when he was 4. F
3 Einstein did not enjoy school. F
4 Einstein was interested in science from an early age. T
5 Einstein never got into university. DS
