 Is a technique used for scheduling
complex projects that contain
interrelationships between activities or
events.
◦ Two major techniques:
 Project Evaluation and Review Technique
(PERT)
 Critical Path Method (CPM)
 Activities – the time or resources needed to
progress from one event to another in a PERT
network
 Events – the end points that represent the
completion of major activities in a PERT
network
 Slack time – the amount of time an individual
activity can be delayed without delaying the
whole project
 Path – is one sequence of jobs from start to
finish, each a prerequisite for the next
 Critical path – the longest sequence activities
in a PERT network
 Developed in the late 1950s for coordinating
more than 3,000 contractors and agencies
working on the Polaris submarine weapon
system.
 Is a network analysis technique, using
estimates of the time required to complete
tasks, which is used to schedule and control
projects for which task completion times
cannot be predicted fairly precisely.
 Is a flow or time chart allowing for the
monitoring of activities and
anticipation of problems so changes
or improvements can be made as the
project progresses.
 Define a clear, unequivocal finish
point (concrete objective)
 Identify the precise starting point
(here and now)
 Develop a project design
 Schedule the project
 Control the project
 Is a network analysis technique used to
schedule and control work on projects for
which the time required to complete tasks is
known fairly precisely.

 [See example]
 Is an economic technique used to evaluate
individual projects as well as to decide among
alternatives.

 is a method of making choices
