how to format a cover letter

Procedures
1. Introduction (5 min). Inform students of what a cover letter is and the pieces of it that we will be going over today, such as format, what information you provide in
a cover letter, how to address a cover letter.
2. Project sample of a cover letter and read to class. Break down the parts starting from the beginning. Look at the address and who the letter is written too. Then
underline each major point that the person has made in their cover letter that shows would make them a good candidate for the position. Discuss format and
spacing of the letter. (15 min).
3. Pass out example that was shown as well as a template and checklist for students to reference. (2 min).
4. Inform students that their cover letters shouldbe based on the job application that they chose last week. Also, it should be typed, but can be written first using the
printed template if they prefer. Allow students time to work on cover letter. (40 min)
5. Closing/reminders. (5 min.) Students need to complete this for homework and should email me a copy when finished so that I can make sure they have done it all
correctly. If multiple students have issues, we will print out cover letters and peer review to make any changes on another day.
