Kids: When was your first reaction when you found you had the HIV virus?
Magic Johnson: I felt devasted, upset, disappointed... Why me?
Kids: How did you learn to live with the illness?
M.J. : The first reaction was sadness, rage. But you have to think “How am I going to
defeat it? How am I going to deal with it? First you need a positiuve attitude; then you
have to eat right and rest a lot.
Kids: What is AIDS exactly?
M.J. : A vírus (HIV) enters your body and destroys some of the immune system that
fights other infections. It leaves your body open for other infections to come in.
Kids: How can you get the HIV virus?
M.J.: There are three main ways?
1-sharing injections needles
2-unprotected sex –without a condom
3-transfusion with contamined blood
Kids: Did you ever expect to get the HIV virus?
M.J. : No,never. Like most people, you think AIDS does not affect you because you are not gay and AIDS is
a gay disease. I was very naive to think that only gay people get the virus. No, it is not who you are that
matters, but it is how you behave that is importante.
Kids: How can you be protected from AIDS when you have sex?
M.J.:You have to wear a condom, but it is not 100% safe. So,don’t hurry to have sex, you are not immortal
and remember: AIDS is inside, not outside people.It is not dangerous to be close to a person who has AIDS
or the virus. Play, talk, swim, dance, etc. do not contaminate us.
