Materials/Properties
By Beatia Siame Mwansa
Copperbelt University
Recommended Texts
• Magnetic Materials: Fundamentals and
Applications by Nicola Spaldin.
– Excellent introduction to magnetic materials and
should be regarded as the ‘core text’.
• Introduction to Magnetism and Magnetic
Materials by David Jiles.
– Covers all aspects of this module section.
• Modern Magnetic Materials
by R.C. O’Handley.
– Covers all aspects relevant here but in greater detail
than the above texts, particularly magnetic sensors
Learning Outcomes
• By the end of this lecture you should be able to:
– Explain what is meant by a magnetic material.
– Define the terms magnetic field, magnetic moment,
magnetisation, magnetic induction and magnetic
susceptibility.
– Use a quantum mechanical picture to explain why atoms can
carry magnetic moments.
– Work out the electronic structure of an atom using Hund’s rules
and explain how this affects an atoms magnetic moment.
– Discuss the differences in properties between diamagnetic,
paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and
ferrimagnetic materials.
– Explain the physical origins of diamagnetism and
paramagnetism.
