“Children of the Corn”

“Children of the Corn” is a film that was released in 1984 based on Stephen King’s short

story. The story shows children form Gatlin, Nebraska being controlled by a demonic god so that

they can kill their parents and any other adult so that the cornfields can prosper (King, 2016).

This demonic god, ‘He Who Walks Behind the Rows, ’ represented an entity that was shunned in

the past. He presently manifests himself as the superior being in order to ensure that the cornfield

remains undisturbed forever. Many communities have a religious background, and they tend to

be critical about other people who are not religious or who believe in different beliefs that they

cannot relate to. A couple of Vicky and Burt believe in science, which is why they were mocking

the religious broadcast. Most of the time, families can be judgmental at times, and this can cause

strife in the community.

In the story, there is a scene where the children of the corn create a bizarre husk cross that

was stumbled upon by Burt. This kind of creative writing creates suspense and comprehension,

which are important skills in creating the ambiance for the horror story. A source of trauma in

the story can be seen when Vicky and Burt hit a child who has had his throat slit by Malachi,

who is the preacher's second-hand man. Vicky wants to repeat the incident to the police while

Burt is more cautious and looks through the man's suitcase for clues. The community in the story

is very close, and they are very hostile towards outsiders. This shows a sense of loyalty, even

though the dedication creates violence. Such a scenario shows how relationships can develop

obligations that can negatively affect an individual. This story has a fairytale theme in regards to

the demonic god who appears to be the all-powerful being in the story with the way he is

controlling the children. The fantastical theme makes the story more interesting, which

encourages greater attention.
