Question#1:

Why DSB-SC is most frequently used.

Answer:

It stands for double-sideband suppressed-carrier system. In this system, the carrier is suppressed and sidebands
are transmitted only. For 100% modulation (m=1), carrier signal contains 2/3 of the total transmitted power
(Approximately 66.67% of PT).

PC = PT [2/(2+ m2)]

PC = PT [2/ (2+ 12)]

PC =[2/3] PT

In the DSB-SC modulation, unlike in AM, the wave carrier is not transmitted; thus, much of the power is distributed
between the side bands, which implies an increase of the cover in DSB-SC, compared to AM, for the same power
used.

DSB-SC is basically an amplitude modulation wave without the carrier, therefore reducing power waste, giving it a
100% efficiency. This is an increase compared to normal AM transmission (DSB) that has a maximum efficiency of
33.333%, since 2/3 of the power is in the carrier which conveys no useful information and both sidebands containing
identical copies of the same information.

When amplitude modulation is carried out, the modulating signal spectrum is shifted to the carrier frequency band.
DSB-SC is so named because the modulating signal extends symmetrically on both sides of the carrier wave. SSB-
SC is DSB-SC with only one side band.

DSB-SC (Double-Sideband Suppressed Carrier)

DSB-SC spectrum has both the sidebands and no carrier is present. Hence it needs two times the bandwidth of SSBS.
It has advantages of having lower power consumption but needs complex detection at the receiver side.

SSB-SC (Single-Sideband Suppressed Carrier)

SSB-SC spectrum has only one sidebands either lower or upper. There is no carrier in the transmission. It needs half
of the bandwidth used for DSBSC transmission.

Question#2:

Find out the applications of different forms of Amplitude Modulation.

Answer:

Double-sideband suppressed-carrier transmission (DSB-SC)

Applications:

 DSB-SC transmission is a special case of double-sideband reduced carrier transmission. It is used for radio
data systems.
 One important application of DSB is the transmission of color information in a TV signal.
 DSB-SC is a technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting information via a
radio carrier wave.
 DSB-SC used in stereo transmission of FM radio.
 Two-way radio communications.

This is best shown graphically. Below is a message signal that one may wish to modulate onto a carrier, consisting of
a couple of sinusoidal components with frequencies respectively 800 Hz and 1200 Hz.
The modulation is performed by multiplication in the time domain, which yields a 5 kHz carrier signal, whose
amplitude varies in the same manner as the message signal.

The name "suppressed carrier" comes about because the carrier signal component is suppressed—it does not appear
in the output signal. This is apparent when the spectrum of the output signal is viewed. In the picture shown below
we see four peaks, the two peaks below 5000 Hz are the lower sideband (LSB) and the two peaks above 5000 Hz are
the upper sideband (USB), but there is no peak at the 5000 Hz mark, which is the frequency of the suppressed
carrier.

Single-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation (SSB-SC):

 In radio communications, single-sideband modulation (SSB) or single-sideband suppressed-carrier
modulation (SSB-SC) is a type of modulation, used to transmit information, an audio signal, by radio waves.
 Amplitude modulation produces an output signal that has twice the bandwidth of the original baseband
signal. Single-sideband modulation avoids this bandwidth doubling, and the power wasted on a carrier, at the
cost of increased device complexity and more difficult tuning at the receiver.
 Less bandwidth requirements. This allow more number of signals to be transmitted in the same frequency
range.
 Lots of power saving. This is due to the transmission of only one sideband component. At 100% modulation,
the percent power saving is 83.33%.

 Reduced interference of noise. This is due to the reduced bandwidth. As the bandwidth increases, the amount
of noise added to the signal will increase.
