THINGS YOU SHOULD HAVE IN MIND

 Where is the article going to appear?


o An article is written to be published in a magazine or a newspaper.
 Who are the intended readers?
o It is addressed to a wide audience: it must attract the reader
o Teenagers, adults, professionals, etc.
 What is the aim of the article?
o There are many different aims: advise, suggest, inform, compare and contrast, describe,
give opinion, etc.

STRUCTURE

TITLE
 Hook: provocative sentence to attract the reader
 No more than 5 words
INTRODUCTION General statement including all the key points to be developed in the article:
3-4 lines  Who + when + where + how + what + why
Sometimes a rhetorical question may be included
PARAGRAPH 1:
TELLING THE STORY Argument, background, controversy
4-5 lines  Gradually develop the
PARAGRAPH 2: information surrounding each
GIVE SPECIFIC DETAILS Evidence key point.
4-5 lines  Amplify reader’s knowledge
PARAGRAPH 3 (EXTRA): from the introduction
SUPPORT THE DETAILS Extra data
4-5 lines
CONCLUSION Make a brief summary
3-4 lines  Try to be objective. Readers must have their own opinion after reading.
 Do not give an opinion unless you need to (in an opinion article, you must)
 Pose a question or provide further information resources.
