Key Attributes

Specific attributes- A specific attribute is a skill that person can learn throughout his/her career and is
specific to individual jobs and work places.

Technical Knowledge- Employers value employees to have a good amount of technical knowledge. Technical
knowledge is a skill that involves an understanding of modern technology, it enables the person with the skill
to be able to thrive in a setting that involves the subject. The level of technical knowledge you need is
dependant on the role you have. For example, to be a computer programmer you would need to understand
different types of software language such as C++, Python and Java. A doctor would need more technical
knowledge than what a nurse would need and a surgeon for example would need more than the doctor. This is
valued by an employer because technology is used in most if not all workplace environments. To be able to
know how to use it is an essential skill to help the business grow.

Health and Safety- They also value employees to have a good understanding of health and safety. This is a skill
that regulates and insures that accidents or injuries don’t occur in the workplace. Employers value this because
it shows that an employee has the knowledge to organize him/herself in an appropriate way for example in the
case of a fire having a good understanding of health and safety will ensure he/she can evacuate colleagues out
of the building correctly or handle the situation if required e.g. using a fire extinguisher correctly and safely. It
also shows Employees understand the procedures on reporting workplace violence and accidents in a health
and safety log book for later investigation.

Security- Employers like to see that employees understand security. This is a very important attribute because
security is a core part for all businesses’ as it insures the company, employees and customers are safe and
protected. For example, security in businesses would consist of all databases having password and firewalls to
prevent company and customer data being leaked and exposed. Another example would be in a IT setting
employees would need to know what to look for as potential security risks, such as unknown and suspicious
email links. Employers value employees having security knowledge because it vital for the employees to
remain safe with in their work place. It also protects the business itself from being in danger from theft, loss of
data, and also risk of the business failing.

General Attributes- A general attribute is a skill that a person can naturally have but be developed and
improved on throughout his/her career. These attributes are required in most if not all workplace
environments.

Time Management- A general attribute employers’ value is a reasonable amount of time management. Time
management is the ability to organize one’s self in a way that he/she will have completed all tasks set out to
them before a deadline, doing so in such a way that each task had a reasonable amount of time to be
completed. For example, if an employer gave the employer a task that was due in a months’ time and the
employer already had a separate task to complete the following week from the deadline he/she was given.
they would then have to evaluate the two tasks and make an estimate of which task would require the most
time to complete before the deadlines. This is valued by the employer because a lot of work in businesses’ is
fast paced and deadlined. It also shows the employer that you can work under pressure while completing set
tasks.

Team Work- Another attribute that is valued is team work. This is the ability to work collaboratively with a
group of colleagues to achieve a set task. Teamwork is an important part of a business, because it is important
for colleagues to work well together under different scenarios. This means that people will cooperate, using
their individual skills to insure they maintain productivity. For example, if the employer has set a task for their
employees they could then get together and discuss the tasks in a fashion where each person’s input can be
considered and specific skills implemented into the work that’s needed to be done to complete the task. This is
valued by an employer because when a group of individuals work well together their different range of skills
and personalities bounce of each other therefor boosting efficiency and overall a happy environment to work.

Creativity- Employers look for employees that have a good amount of creativity. Creativity is a skill that
consists of a person using their imagination and unique ideas and turning them into real and genuine plans for
productivity. This skill is important because if all employees of a business think of creative ways to overcome
tasks and boost productivity then potentially each idea could be integrated together to make a realistic and
successful way of completing task. This will also boost teamworking in the workplace. For example, if an
employer wants to advertise the business in a more realistic but creative way he/she can ask employees to
think of ways they think would help the company be more successful. Employers value creativity because it
allows the employees to be open minded and apply their own input in how the business is run.

Attitudes- Attitudes are preferred traits and qualities that an employer looks for in person to insure he/she is
the right person for the role.

Independence- One attitude an employer would look for is independence. To be independent means that you
have the ability to work on your own, with little to no direction and do so with confidence. This means you can
manage your own work and know how to respond to difficulties or challenges you may face. An example of
independence is if your employer tells you to complete a task in a set amount of time and on your own then
you must yours your independence skills to manage your time affectively and complete any research if
necessary. This is valued by employers because it shows that you have a good level of confidence to get on
with the work in a reasonable time frame with no guidance. This also shows that you have the ability to think
on your feet if you encounter problems in your work.

Tolerance- Another attitude an employer prefers people to have is tolerance. This means that no matter what
environment you work in and who you work with you can respect each other’s opinions and views. And that
you recognise what is acceptable and unacceptable to say or do in the workplace. For example, if a colleague
expresses his opinion on a subject in work then you must respect his/her views. If you disagree with their
views then you can provide your opinion in a respectful and peaceful manner. All employees have the freedom
of speech providing they use it in a considerate and non-hateful way. This is valued by employers because a
lack of tolerance creates gaps between colleagues and leads to misunderstandings and poor behaviours in the
workplace. This then consequently slows productivity and makes a gloomy workplace environment.

Confidence- A attitude that employers also look for is confidence. Confidence is an attribute that shows that an
employee is certain that he or she can complete a task successfully and they feel they know how to deal with
problems. For example, if an employee has a very positive attitude to his/her work and is happy completing
tasks set to them then it shows they have a high level of confidence. Employers value confidence because it is
a natural trait that people are born with. The level of confidence you have reflects greatly on the type of
person you are. Employers pick up on this and use it to determine which people are best for the job in
question. It also shows the employer that you are comfortable working on tasks independently and with
deadlines, and that you are capable of working for them under the policies and conditions of the workplace.
