7) Ruggedness and flexibility:

Protective coatings are essential to optical fibers of a glass

material

Fibers may bent to quite small radii or twisted without damage

Cable structures are made as flexible, compact and extremely

rugged

Due to size and weight advantage optical fiber cables are

superior in storage, transportation, handling and installation with
more strength and durability

8) System reliability and ease of maintenance:

Low-loss optical fiber cables reduces intermediate repeaters or

line amplifiers

Lesser number of optical repeaters or amplifiers improves system

reliability

Reliability of the optical components is better due to predicted

lifetimes of 20 to 30 years
