Labor Day

128 years have passed since the first workers' strike in the city of Chicago. It was a
May 1, 1886, when more than 190 thousand workers demanded better living
conditions, fair working hours, days of rest, personal dignity, among other
demands. The balance was devastating, hundreds of dead and wounded, in the
face of the brutal repression suffered by those who in their just right demanded
better days and decent living and working conditions. In recognition of the 1886
struggle, the First Congress of the Second Socialist International, held in Paris in
1889, decided that each May 1 commemorate "Labor Solidarity, Workers' Day.

The "Tag der Arbeit", as Labor Day is known, is considered a special holiday in
Germany since many German families take advantage of this day to spend it
together, going to make the famous picnics in the big parks. On the other hand, in
many of the towns belonging to Bavaria the traditional event of "Maibaum" (Palo
de Mayo) is held, which is a cane decorated with colored ribbons and where there
may be some carved figures. It is intended to celebrate the warm season that
occurs during this time.
