Reflection of Classroom Observation

I had the privilege of doing my observation hours at Caddo Mills Middle School with the

Life Skills teacher, Pam White. In her life skills classroom, she teaches sixth through eighth

grade. She teaches seven periods a day, and she covers their core classes as well as Life Skills

and Social Skills.

As a future teacher I learned that having passion and a heart for the students is a

necessity. I was able to participate along with their morning news story, where they talked about

the weather and held calendar time. I also learned from my observation that being organized,

helps to keep the students busy and avoids downtime, so that the students do not become

disengaged. She taught with educational videos and songs, before teaching a lesson. After

spending sixteen hours in the classroom observing, it made me even more excited to become a

teacher. It helped me to see it from a different view, I was able to sit back and watch the

interactions between the students and the teacher. It was an overall great experience, and one that

I hope to be a part of for someone else in the future. The teacher had an overall positive

environment in her classroom. The students were comfortable with each other and the teacher,

and very welcoming to me as a guest in their classroom. The teacher I observed has been

teaching for over twenty-five years, and still enjoys her job. This was felt and seen by the way

she taught and interacted with her students and other teachers.

The learning styles I observed were visual learning and tactile learning. She had a lot of

hands on activities. For example, in Math she had manipulatives for the students to use when

doing addition and subtraction. She allowed the students to stand or sit where they felt

comfortable learning. Mrs. White also included videos to go along with her lessons, especially in

her Science class. Most of her lessons were student centered, each student was on a different

level within every course she taught. She had lessons prepared for every student in every class.

She focused her attention on what the student needed to learn to be successful. The success for

every student in her classroom looks different. She teaches the students about real world

concerns and applies her curriculum to fit their needs.

In my future classroom, I hope to implement everything I have learned in these sixteen

hours of observation. I liked the fun and educational songs that she included in her lessons. I also

took from the experience about the freedom of where to sit or even stand as the students learn. I

liked the positive culture she had in her classroom and I hope to be able to recreate that in my

own classroom with my students every year. I know this is only the beginning and I hope to

observe many other classrooms and teachers. I want the best for my future students, and I feel

that with my mentor teacher she has provided me that opportunity.
