BATIK PILLOWS

3rd Grade

I. UNIT OVERVIEW (RATIONALE)


In this unit we will be creating small pillows made of cotton fabric, decorated with a batik
technique. This technique encourages creativity and innovative thinking. Students will also use
these techniques as a means to create a personally satisfying work of art.

III-A. LEARNER OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES


Students will be able to create a design that represents an imaginative idea within their
artwork.
Students will be able to use the supplies and techniques provided to create an artwork that is
personally satisfying.
Students will be able to develop their ideas and show their planning through details in their
work.

III-B. NATIONAL ART STANDARDS


Students will use dyes and glue to create patterns and designs that elaborate on their
imaginative ideas. [VA:Cr1.1.3a Elaborate on an imaginative idea.]
Students will use different techniques with fabric dyes and making patterns with glue; creating
a personally satisfying artwork. [VA:Cr2.1.3a Create personally satisfying artwork using a
variety of artistic processes and materials.]
Students will add layers to their work, building upon the visual information of their imaginative
idea to further show meaning in their work. [VA:Cr3.1.3a Elaborate visual information by

 8x8 squares of cotton fabric
 Elmer’s gel glue
 Fabric dye
 Small containers
 Paint brushes
 Fabric markers
 Sewing machine
 White thread
