Medium Voltage | Contrax Technique

Benefits begins by quality

Cable accessories are indispensable and determinant for the quality of an electrical distribution network. They
must guarantee the same reliability as the cable itself. Due to the high costs incurred by the operation of medium
voltage networks, failures must be avoided. Therefore it is of outmost importance to the electrical utilities to achie-
ve an easy, quick and among all safe installation of cable accessories.

The Contrax joints family is specially designed for a reliable connection of all screened medium voltage power
cables up to 36kV. Since the main components of the joints are already integrated into one pre-moulded unit the
numbers of parts to be installed are drastically reduced. Thanks to the compact design and construction, installati-
on, transport and storage costs are saved.

Advantages

• Easy, fast and safe to install

• Wide cross-section application range
• For press as well as mechanical connectors
• Compact construction
• Less components to install
• Unlimited storage
• Electrically tested at the factory
• Type tested according to CENELEC HD 629.1

Benefits

• Granted quality
• Network reliability
• Reduction of installation, transport and storage costs

Joint Features

Contrax straight-through joint Type CAM and CAM3 are conceived for jointing all kind
of single or three-core medium voltage screened power cables with plastic insulation
(EPR, PVC, XLPE) with different outer semi-conductive layer (graphitized, peelable
or fully-bonded) as well as screen construction (copper band or wires) for a system
voltage up to 36kV and for main cross-sections from 25mm² to 630 mm².

The core of the Contrax joint is based on the pre-moulded joint body made of flexible
silicone rubber with excellent electrical resistance. It consists of a semi-conductive
inner layer, which serves as a Faraday cage for the connector, followed by a main
insulation and a semi-conductive outer sheath obtained through a controlled injection
process. An intensive quality production process and electrical tests ensure long life
reliability. To facilitate the installation, as well as to protect the joint body of any dama-
ge, an integrated slip-on applicator is pre-installed in our factory.

element also reduces the

electrical stress at the lips
of the inner conductive
layer onto the joint body.

Through the patented applicator, faulty cable preparation

or joint body positioning are avoided and the volume of
potential installation defects is drastically reduced.

A set of copper socks with contact roll springs gives the

joint a universal screen continuity, for both copper wire
or band cable screen, as well as armored and non-armo-
red cables. The outer protection of the joint is performed
by means of a heat-shrink thick wall tube with integrated
melting sealant or by an inject system made of special
tapes and cast-resin. Both systems offer an excellent
water tightness and mechanical strength.
