Typhoon Yolanda (GROUP 5)

 The thirtieth named storm, thirteenth typhoon, and fifth super typhoon of the 2013 Pacific
typhoon season.
 It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record.
 Originated from an area of low pressure several hundred kilometers east-southeast of
Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia on November 2, 2013.
 Dissipated on November 11, 2013 over Guangxi Province, China.
 Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2013, as a Category 5
storm at Guiuian, Eastern Samar.
 Wind gusts exceeded 305 kilometers (190 miles) per hour at first landfall
 The most powerful storm ever recorded to strike land.
 The powerful front drove a giant wall of seawater called a storm surge, estimated to be
7.5 meters (24.6 feet) high, into coastal towns like Tacloban, a city of 240,000 people.
 Major cause of fatalities was the storm surge and not the strong winds.

 Relief and rescue efforts were underway by November 9, but some places remained
isolated and out of communication due to severe damage.
 By November 11, the provinces of Aklan, Capiz, Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, Palawan, and
Samar were placed under a state of national calamity
 According to estimates on November 13, only 20 percent of the affected population in
Tacloban City was receiving aid.
 Typhoon Haiyan knocked over Power Barge 103 of NAPOCOR in Estancia, Iloilo
causing an oil spill.
 Throughout Tacloban City, widespread looting took place in the days following Haiyan's
passage.
 Total number of casualties in the Philippines is 6300, while 1061 persons are still
missing.
 The amount of the damage was 95.5 billion pesos.
