New Disturbing Issue
Update on Emerging Issue
Hospitals have reported 73 cases
of what they now think may be a COVID-related
illness in children mostly toddler to elementary
school age with symptoms similar to Kawasaki
disease and toxic shock-like syndrome.

The illness has taken the lives

of three young New Yorkers.
Update on Emerging Issue

At the request of the CDC, New York is helping

to develop the national criteria for identifying
and responding to this syndrome.
Update on Emerging Issue

The NYS Department of Health is also partnering with

the NY Genome Center and the Rockefeller University
to conduct a genome and RNA sequencing study
to better understand the disease and the possible
genetic basis of this syndrome.

attention:

Poor and minority communities

are suffering the most.

A deeper look into two of the most impacted
communities in the survey,
in Brooklyn & the Bronx, found communities
of color are also lower-income and have
greater percentage of COVID hospitalizations
and infections than NYC overall.

Why is it that during a disaster, the poorest and
most vulnerable always pay the highest price?

The mortality rate among African Americans in Orleans Parish following Hurricane
Katrina was up to 4 times higher than the rate among white residents for people 18+.
Why is it that during a disaster, the poorest and
most vulnerable always pay the highest price?

Over 100,000 residents of predominately-black Flint, MI were exposed to elevated

levels of lead in their water supply an issue that continues six years later.
Why is it that during a disaster, the poorest and
most vulnerable always pay the highest price?

More than 500,000 African Americans lost their homes in the Great
Mississippi Flood of 1927 and were forced to relocate to shoddy relief camps.
We can break this cycle.
Delivering for Those Most Impacted

In New York, we are taking on inequalities

and delivering for those who have been
most impacted by the COVID pandemic.
Delivering for Those Most Impacted

• Ramped up testing in low-income communities and

communities of color.
• Partnered with Ready Responders to bring healthcare
services, including COVID-19 diagnostic testing, to
residents of public housing in New York City.
• Delivered one million cloth masks and
10,000 gallons of hand sanitizer to public housing.
Today we are launching a
new initiative to expand access to
testing in low-income communities
and communities of color.
In partnership with Northwell Health, we are
establishing 24 temporary testing sites at
churches in predominantly minority communities.
