Mrs. Eddy had the students in two different groups. She led one group and a paraprofessional led the other.
At one point in the lesson Mrs. Eddy noticed that one of her students was lagging behind with the choral reading, so she simply asked the student if he needed the group to slow the pace a bit.
The boy said, "Yes" and the group seamlessly changed its pace.

Mrs. Eddy knows all the students' names and pronounces them appropriately. She uses enduring terms in some cases. At one point she stated to Jason, "Where is your seat, bud?" The student
knew that she was addressing him because of eye contact and body language. This sort of language helps to build a risk-free environment where the students are not afraid to learn.

The class has a safe learning environment. When a student that was not on task approached Mrs. Eddy with a concern about purchasing an eraser she quickly and respectfully suggested a solution
that the boy was happy with. He did not feel ignored or disrespected.

Leticia typed the words for review and accidently spelled EASILY incorrectly. She noticed the error and calmly rewrote the correct spelling above it. This was a perfect way to show students that we
all make mistakes and that we just fix them when we do.

Leticia attended a two day training in Portland last month. The workshop addressed autism and a variety of challenging behaviors. She attends the district's special education meetings monthly. She
also meets with other new special education teachers to get their views and learn from their situations.
