RELATIVE CLAUSES
A relative clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun, noun phrase or a pronoun. Relative clauses are often
introduced by relative pronouns such as who, which, where, when, whom, whose, that and why.

Examples:
Sharon, WHOSE book you’ve borrowed, is very generous.

WH RELATIVE CLAUSES
1.- A relative clause is a clause that modifies the noun before it.

2.- They can either define/identify the noun or simply give extra information.

3.- The relative pronouns are: Who, Which, and That, and they can act as the subject or object
of the verb in the relative clause.

4.- Who refers to a person; Which, to a thing; That, to a person or a thing.

5.- That is also used as a connector and comes immediately after a verb. The antecedent is the

RELATIVE PRONOUNS
We use relative pronouns to refer to a noun mentioned before. They are used to join two or more sentences to form “relative”
or “complex” sentences.

The following relative pronouns are used in defining and non-defining relative clauses:

Person Thing Place Time Reason

Subject Who/that Which/that

Object Who/whom/that Which/that Where When Why

Possessive Whose Whose

RELATIVE PRONOUN USE EXAMPLE

Subject or object pronoun for people. He told you about the woman who lives next
Who

Subject or object pronoun for people, They don´t want to fix the car that we need to
That animals and things in defining relative drive tomorrow.

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Information in these clauses is not essential. They give us extra information, but the idea still makes sense without
them. These clauses are always separated from the rest of the sentence by commas, and always use a relative pronoun. In
non-defining clauses, you can not use “that” instead of “who”, “whom” or “which” (see example 1). Non- defining clauses are
quite formal and are typical of written English. In spoken English less formal structures are preferred (see example 2).

Example 1: the information given is: “Jane has just bought an awesome car. Jane is my neighbor.”
Jane, who is my neighbor, has bought an awesome car.

Example 2:
Written English: My father, who is 75 now, still works out.
Spoken English: My father is 75 and still works out.

PERSON THING PLACE POSSESSION

Who Which Where Whose

1. Mr. Garza, ____________________________________, is an intelligent person.

2. My new neighbor, _____________________________________ , bought a new luxury car.
3. Dolphins, ___________________________________, are the most intelligent aquatic animals.
4. That house, __________________________________, is now a hospital.
5. I spoke to the principal, ________________________________________, who explained the problem.

TAG QUESTIONS
1. A. TO BE IN PRESENT AND PAST

THE USE OF TAG QUESTIONS.

- A TAG QUESTION is an expression like aren’t you? / isn’t it? Or doesn’t it? at the end of a sentence.
- We use TAG QUESTIONS in conversations to ask if what we said is true or not, or if the other person agrees or not.
- If we use a rising intonation (if our voice goes up) with a TAG QUESTION, we’re asking a real question. We’re not sure if the
answer is yes or no. (in each question the voice rises at the end because the person isn’t sure if it’s true or not.)

You’re English, aren’t you? ↑

The flight back takes 24 hours, doesn’t it? ↑

- If in the intonation we use a falling (if our voice goes down), we’re expecting the other person to agree with what we’ve just
said. (He means “I’m sure you agree.”)

Our plane’s late, isn’t it? ↓

3
UANL PREPARATORIA 2 ENGLISH 4 MODULE 4 DESIGNED AND CREATED BY: DR. MARIO ALBERTO GARZA MORALES

- TAG QUESTIONS are not very common in American English. Americans often use tag words like Right? Or OK? Instead.

You’re English, right? (Instead of You’re English, aren’t you?)

- TAG QUESTIONS always have two words: an AUXILIARY VERB (are, can, have, will, etc.) + A PRONOUN (it, she, they,
etc.) The pronoun refers to the subject of the sentence.

Americans don’t like tea, do they? (they = Americans)

- TAG QUESTIONS are also called QUESTION TAGS or ATTACHED QUESTIONS

1.B. POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TAG QUESTIONS?

- If we say something POSITIVE, the tag question is usually NEGATIVE.

POSITIVE NEGATIVE

It’s been hot, hasn’t it?

- If we say something NEGATIVE, the tag question is POSITIVE.

NEGATIVE POSITIVE

It hasn’t rained for weeks, has it?

- Note the form of the negative tag question after I am.

You’re pretty brown. Yes I am, aren’t I? (NOT am I?)

- If a statement has a modal auxiliary verb (will, should, might, can, etc.), we use the same auxiliary verb in the tag
question.
Our T.V. program should be starting soon, shouldn’t it?

- After There is / There are the question tags are: is there? / isn’t there? and: are there?/aren’t there?

There are many cars in the park, aren’t there?

- When there is NO VISIBLE AUXILIARY in the sentence, and the sentence is in PRESENT TENSE you have to use Do (with
pronouns I, you, we, they) or Does (he, she, it) according to the subject used in the sentence.

Mike loves coffee, doesn’t he?

They answer the phone, don’t they?

- When there is NO VISIBLE AUXILIARY in the sentence, and the sentence is in PAST TENSE you have to use DID (he, she,
it, I, you, we, they) according to the subject used in the sentence.

The boys skated pretty well, didn’t they?

MY FAMILY

I have a great family and I love it. I am going to make a description of my father, my mother, my sister, my brother, one
of my uncles and my aunt.

My father, Alberto, is forty-six years old. I think he is a handsome man because some women find him attractive. He is not very
tall, and although his face is square, he has a beautiful smile, showing some small teeth. He is brown-eyed and his hair is also
brown. He weighs about seventy-two kilos and looks somewhat slim. He is very kind and so sensible that he cries when
seeing sad movies. He is never angry and at the factory he is reliable and hard-working.

My mother, Gloria, is forty-three years old. She is white-skinned, green-eyed, and straight, long, brown-haired. She is average
height and looks somewhat chubby, because she is overweighed. At home, she is nice, kind and responsible.

My sister, Anna, is twenty-one years old. She is taller than me. She’s light-dark-skinned, brown-eyed and short, brown-haired
like my father. She weighs about forty-five kilos and looks quite skinny. She is not pretty but not ugly. At school, she is nice,
polite and friendly, besides she’s very responsible.

My brother, Ramiro, is nineteen years old. His face is square with a small nose, a big mouth, big, square teeth, and a light
brown moustache. He’s the tallest of the family and weighs about seventy kilos. At school, he’s charming among the girls, but
sometimes he seems to be rude and insensitive to his friends. He’s lazy to do the homework.

My uncle, Thomas, is somewhat tall and I don’t know how old he is. His face is oval with small, black eyes. Although he has a
long black beard, he’s completely bald. He is really fat, weighing about one-hundred kilos. When he gets angry, he’s very
impolite, insensitive and irresponsible. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen frequently.

My aunt, Dora, is shorter than my mother. She’s forty-five years old and she’s always happy. She’s green-eyed and blond-
tinted-haired. She’s a typewriter and, at her office, she’s nice, sympathetic, reliable and hard-working.
