EDITORIAL

Digitalization meets Reality

Henry Ford, the pioneer of automotive production, is often quoted as saying: “Coming
together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” For 40
years now, BVL has been keeping logistics people together, thereby playing its part in follow-
ing Ford’s formula for success. The International Supply Chain Conference is particularly rele-
vant in this respect. It will already be taking place for the 35th time this year, making it only
slightly younger than BVL itself. By choosing “Digitalization meets Reality” as the theme for
2018, we want to make this year’s conference the place where key factors come together.
Digitalization provides us with impressive tools for the interconnection of humans and
machines or the use of intelligent autonomous systems. But there is also the question of
whether and how these technologies can play a significant role in solving the pressing
problems of the logistics sector in the short and medium term. Capacity bottlenecks on
the transport front and in infrastructure, volatile markets, political uncertainties, and a
long-predicted skill shortage pose very real problems for our sector of the economy.

On October 17, the doors of the biggest cross-sector forum for logistics and supply chain
management will once again open for the three-day International Supply Chain Conference
in Berlin. You can look forward to more than 3,000 attendees and let yourself be inspired by Robert Blackburn
Chairman of the Board,
more than 120 speakers who can provide examples for the impressive interplay of logistics Bundesvereinigung Logistik (BVL), Bremen
and IT. In the words of visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk: “What makes innovative thinking
happen? I think it’s really a mindset. You have to decide”.

We look forward to seeing you in Berlin.

Robert Blackburn Digitalization meets Reality

Chairman of the Board,
Bundesvereinigung Logistik (BVL), The digital transformation appears to be changing everything – but can it
Bremen also solve the problems currently faced by logistics? The major challenges for
logistics managers in industry, trade and services are inadequate physical and
digital infrastructure, a shortage of drivers, insufficient freight space and global
political uncertainty. The 35th International Supply Chain Conference is devoted to
promoting the beneficial interplay of logistics and IT.

German Industries (BDI), and is set to propose new climate laws in 2019 – because unlike energy and industry,
Berlin the transport sector has failed to cut CO2 emissions compared to the 1990 baseline. In
its climate path study, the BDI outlines strategies and conditions to show how, despite
the growth in traffic volumes, climate targets can be fully achieved in the logistics
sector by 2050 by various means, including the digitisation of mobility.

therefore enablers of maximum transparency in the supply chain as well as higher
machine productivity. Sensor intelligence facilitates the utilisation of all available
data “in situ” and can use this data to make autonomous decisions.

MODERATION Digitalization Meets Reality in the Global Economy and Society

Joachim Limberg
Chairman of the Management Board, Digitization is also transforming industry and society in the global context.
Business Area Materials Services, Interconnection, transparency and automation have a major effect on how
thyssenkrupp AG, Essen, companies interact and cooperate across national borders. At the same time,
Deputy Chairman of the BVL Board digitization has negative impacts in terms of IT security and the spread of
unverified information. How can we find the right digital balance that benefits
both industry and society?

Søren Toft How Digitization Will Transform Global Supply Chains

Chief Operating Officer,
Member of Executive Board of Today, global supply chains are characterized by siloed steps, requiring
A. P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, coordination, information and actions from several parties at multiple times.
Copenhagen, Denmark It creates high complexity and often customer frustration. What we believe
the logistics industry must do is to improve the customer experience through
greater visibility, connectivity and agility – ideally in a digital ecosystem. For most
traditional logistics companies, especially in the B2B sector, this means changing
existing business models. It requires new ways of working, different capabilities
and a new culture.

Carole Walker Urban Logistics – Customer Focus is Key

Chief Executive Officer,
Hermes Europe GmbH, The topic of future city logistics is a top priority for the logistics sector. After all, the
Hamburg majority of Europeans and hence of parcel senders and receivers live in big cities
– which creates major challenges like reachability due to demographic change,
growing commercial traffic, rising CO2 emissions, and the compatibility of retail
and residential spheres. In this setting, customer obsession is key. Customers want
the most convenient and best-priced delivery option. So how can logistics providers
cope with this complex demand? As competition grows, they are launching ever
faster and ever more flexible services to meet the challenge – and to reach their
customers by the most direct route.

Andrew Keen How to Fix the Future

Author and Entrepreneur,
Santa Rosa, USA As the digital revolution meets reality, we now need to correct its more glaring
failures – including economic inequality, joblessness, a cultural crisis and
surveillance capitalism. So how do we fix the future? First we need to reclaim
human agency back from the algorithm. Then we need to use our five perennial
tools – regulation, innovation, education, consumer power and citizen engagement
– to make human-beings the heart of the digital revolution.

Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther Strangers of Friends? Quo Vadis Europe without the Brits?
Director and Member of the Presidium,
German Economic Institute, Brexit leaves behind losers on all sides. The British government is stumbling
Cologne through the negotiations, seemingly without a plan. The Europeans are losing their
most important financial centre. And the British population can already feel the
effect of rising prices on their wallets. In the era of multilateralism, cooperation

and nationalism. The European idea is still alive.

GALA EVENING

There’s hardly a better place for logistics managers to celebrate an anniversary,

because the STATION has an extremely storied past. Opened in 1875 as the Dresd-
ner Bahnhof railway station and repurposed as a postal station in 1907, it served
as the central point for the delivery of parcels and goods in Berlin for 90 years.
Immerse yourself in fascinating surroundings and a mix of historic architecture,
state-of-the-art technology, fascinating show acts, diverse musical genres and
the very best in catering.

URBANATIX is a group of international world-class street artists whose mem-
bers come from widely varying cultural backgrounds. As in logistics, the sum of
many individual parts makes for a superb overall outcome characterised by vari-
ety, dynamism and high-energy performance.

Professional live and studio musicians from the national and international music
scene join forces to make up NOBLE COMPOSITION. They are among the best
in their field anywhere in Europe and have worked with big names like Michael
Jackson and Michael Bublé. Relax to laid-back sounds or let the faster beats per-
suade you to leave your seat. Enjoy a variety of musical styles presented by
outstanding artists with major scene-cred like Jah Oh, Butch Williams, Alfred
McCrary, Rayla Sunshine, Bonita, DJANE Simone and Pascaline.

The show programme will be rounded off by the fascinating and vibrant
“motion*s” dance and motion studio with its dance crew headed by Stella Caric.

Enjoy a relaxed, laid-back evening with stimulating conversations, music and

The Logistics Heroes October 17, 2018 | 15.00 and 17.00, InterContinental Berlin, Schöneberg
Stop complaining. Do something. “The Logistics Heroes” change the image of logistics!
In the past, many have bemoaned the lack of appreciation for logistics as an integral and indis-
pensable part of the economy. But those days are gone. On the initiative of the BVL “Image of
Logistics” focus group, a cross-company and cross-sector image campaign is being launched
to raise awareness for the key importance of logistics. Meet up with the initiators to hear first-
hand about their ideas and objectives as well as about ways to get involved and the benefits of
the campaign “The Logistics Heroes”. Join in the conversation and have your say! Who is a logis-
tics hero in your eyes? What potential do you see for improving the image of logistics?
Take part in two 45 minute sessions at 15:00 and 16:00.
