Welcome to
The Business Booster 2022!
4
Every year we are extremely proud to bring 150 sustainable energy innovations
under one roof together with industry, investors, and policy makers. This edition
marks a special milestone for EIT InnoEnergy: it is our tenth year hosting the largest
sustainable energy innovation event. Over the past ten years, our ecosystem has
gathered in different capital cities throughout Europe for two days of networking and
to discover the breakthrough technologies of the future, today. In doing so we have
been continuously delivering on our mission of accelerating the energy transition.
But our work is far from over.
The race to reach net-zero by 2050 is in danger of being lost unless we rapidly
activate and scale today’s technologies, while simultaneously unleashing a new
age of discovery to find the unseen solutions of tomorrow. In short, we must focus
all our efforts on a twin strategy of exploration and exploitation. That is why at this
edition of The Business Booster we are focusing on ‘The race to net-zero: Balancing
exploitation and exploration’.
Beating climate change demands rapid innovation from every corner of society. But
because it will take decades to replace today’s fossil fuel-dependent industries with
the cleaner operations of the future, the immediate imperative is to accelerate the
deployment of key existing technologies that can buy humanity more time to meet
the goals of the 2016 Paris Accords. While accelerating today’s technologies will
buy us time, according to the IEA, half the technologies we need to achieve net-
zero haven’t even been invented yet. That means the critical second element of our
mission must be exploration. We must empower and unleash today’s explorers to
discover and develop innovations that will ultimately save the planet.
The net-zero agenda has shown us that the work of our trusted ecosystem is
more important now than ever. And The Business Booster is a unique opportunity
to experience this innovation ecosystem at work in person. Together, we will scale
those big-impact technologies and discover the way forward for those of the
future. Innovation will not only be an enabler of climate goals, but it will also be a
driver of growth, creating jobs, economic prosperity and in the process ensure the
transition to a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future.
After all, we are not just in the race to net-zero. We plan to win it.

Roundtable
Scaling up today’s
key technologies, fast
The world must speed up progress on tackling climate change if we are to meet
the Paris Agreement goals and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It won’t be
easy. But because it will take decades to replace today’s fossil-fuel-dependent
industries with the cleaner operations of the future, the immediate imperative is
to accelerate the deployment of key existing technologies that can buy humanity
more time to create and grow those nascent solutions.
When good is good enough? Current technologies, even if they are not perfect, can meaningfully reduce
emissions in the immediate future, such as green hydrogen, energy storage and renewables like wave,
wind and solar energy. Entrepreneurs and investors must commercialise and scale these to achieve
more sustainable energy to power manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture today.
In this roundtable session, two entrepreneurs will discuss their big-impact technologies and projects
with members of the ecosystem that are bringing them to life. Projects that ten years ago were
impossible and here they are today. Regulators, investors, and industry will weigh in on what is required
to speed the deployment and commercialisation of these technologies, driving the most change in the
short-term as we race towards net-zero.

Digitalisation vs Sustainability:
How big tech is facing
the race to net-zero
A total of 5 billion people around the world use the internet today.
Everything happens online and we use digital devices to connect with
everything around the globe whether it be for business, education or
simply to relax. Amazon ships about 1.6 million packages every single
day. Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day. Facebook’s
global monthly active users reach 2.9 billion.
Data centres in Ireland are now consuming more electricity than
all the rural homes in the country combined. These big tech
corporations are conscious that the power consumption of their data
centres and factories have exponential growth year on year, and
they are developing strategies to deal with this that all industries can
learn from. In this session, we invite you to listen to big tech’s Chief
Sustainability Officers and learn how are they tackling sustainability
and the race to net-zero.

European Battery Alliance
The need for efficient batteries is growing fast, and for Europe, a domestic
battery value chain is vital for a clean energy transition and competitive
industry. The European Commission launched the European Battery Alliance
in October 2017 to address this industrial challenge. The annual market value
is estimated at €250B from 2025 onwards. For Europe, the establishment
of a complete domestic battery value chain is imperative for a clean energy
transition and a competitive industry. The industrial development programme
of the European Battery Alliance (EBA), the EBA250, is managed by EIT
InnoEnergy. Today, EBA250 is a project-driven community that brings
together more than 750 industrial and innovation actors, from mining to
recycling, with the common objective of building a strong and competitive
European battery industry.
EBA Academy
Rightsizing the skills gap
A new industrial revolution is taking place and it’s electric. New projects across
the battery value chain are expected to create between 3 and 4 million direct
and indirect jobs over the next few years. Approximately 800,000 workers will
need to be trained, upskilled, or reskilled by 2025 to meet this demand. With
the EBA Academy, we’re drastically reducing the cost and time to upskill and/
or reskill workers by providing local training providers with access to industry-
proven training, ready for distribution to their clients and end customers.
Only a coordinated approach to developing and delivering training content adapted to the industry’s
skills needs can help ensure that this demand is met. With the EBA Academy, we’re building a pan-
European education ecosystem that will reduce the cost for companies to up- and reskill workers
while drastically increasing the efficiency and quality of in-house training. And we’re reducing the
lead time for local (external) training providers to start and test new programmes or enhance their
existing portfolio for this industry.

European Green Hydrogen
Acceleration Center
The European Green Hydrogen Acceleration Center (EGHAC) has been established to decarbonise the
hard-to-abate industrial value chains for steel, fertilisers, chemicals, and mobility. By bringing together
all stakeholders including the off takers, the risk and benefits can be shared so that the premium for
a carbon-free-produced end product is kept to a minimum. EGHAC builds industrial players and helps
them to de-risk and accelerate their green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and aviation fuel initiatives.
This is done through early-stage investment and acceleration services, provided in collaboration with
the EGHAC ecosystem. In addition, we support other green hydrogen and derivates projects with
assessing and refining their business case, conducting a team
assessment and finally introducing them to a tailor-made
advisory committee, with the objective to become an active
investor and accelerate and de-risk these projects as well.
Via its Business Investment Platform, EGHAC continues to
evaluate new green hydrogen initiatives, looking to reduce
their risk, gain faster entry to market and produce at scale.

We believe that the impact of energy can be expressed not
only through new technologies, but by images that capture
the attention and touch the hearts of people. Since 2018,
we have been running the EIT InnoEnergy photo contest.
World renowned photographers are invited to provide
images related to sustainable energy. The top photographs
are selected by a panel of experts and displayed and
awarded at The Business Booster event.
It is a challenge to communicate an abstract topic such
as energy; but citizen awareness and participation in
sustainable energy can move us towards our goals of
a sustainable planet and quality of life. Using the art in
photographs we can engage citizens to think, feel and act
regarding the imperative energy questions — both in mass
action at the societal level and individual action.
The Business Booster is your chance to witness some of
the world’s most brilliant sustainable energy photography.
After all, energy affects all of us, and more of us will
understand this, and we hope, get excited by the prospects

Larger turbines with longer blades are a popular means to reduce
CUSTOMER REFERENCES levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) values. However, composite
Vestas blades suffer from significantly increased weight and cost,
increasing fatigue on other turbine components and raising the cost
of installation.
THE SOLUTION.
The ACT Blade is a tensioned textile-covered wind turbine blade
with a shape that can be actively changed to control loads. It is
24% lighter than conventional blades, enabling longer blades and
directly contributing to the production of 9% more energy with a 7%
reduction in the cost of energy. As they are component based, ACT
Blades could result in additional manufacturing savings with 63%
tooling costs and 40% factory footprint reductions.
VALUE PROPOSITION.
Lighter, cheaper to produce and easier to transport, the ACT Blade is a
leap forward in blade technology with real potential to increase the use
of wind energy and displace the carbon emission of conventional power

The solar (PV) value chain has large gaps outside of Asia, including
in ingot, brick, wafer and cell manufacturing. The lack of European
capacity for such strategic materials places the EU's energy
autonomy and supply chain resiliency initiatives at risk.
THE SOLUTION.
NCR sells monocrystalline bricks and wafers in various sizes and
with diverse properties. The production method, known as the
Czochralski method, consists of melting high-purity silicon in a
crucible at 1425 ºC (2597 ºF) and then carefully extracting a single
silicon crystal from the melt. NCR’s product roadmap is defined
by customer requirements; to which end, NCR is currently moving
to larger wafer sizes (M10/G12) as a key part of the company’s
capacity expansion.
VALUE PROPOSITION.

combination of hybrid systems and heat pumps. In large systems,
