VAIDIK HAVAN

FIRST EDITION April 2020

SWAMI DAYANANAD EDUCATION FOUNDATION

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS, USA

About the Havan Book
It takes less than 30 minutes to perform the havan. You can recite mantras in English or
Hindi. I have used 12 different names of God in this booklet. Swami Dayanand has listed one
hundred names for God in Satyarth Prakash.

Swami Dayanand Education Foundation (SDEF) has simplified the Vaidik Havan
ceremonies so that everyone understands it. We hope to inspire our younger generation to
maintain their vaidik culture, beliefs, practices and family values. We should feel happy by
teaching our children the vaidik mantras that they must continue with pride what we have
started.

“He, who reads the Vedas even with proper accent, but does not know their meanings, is
like a tree weighed down by its fruits, branches, leaves and flowers or like a quadruped carrying
on its back the burden of grains, which it cannot eat. But he, who understands their meanings
and acts upto their teachings by avoiding sin and leading a virtuous life through righteous actions,
enjoys perfect happiness in this world, and, eternal bliss hereafter in consequence thereof.”

Quoted by—
Swami Dayanand Saraswati
in his monumental work
‘Satyarth Prakash’ (Light of Truth)

God understands all languages for worship. We want to promote Havan in English for
second generation Hindu families children and adults in the USA. Reciting mantras in Sanskrit
without understanding their meaning is not useful. One should fully understand the prayers.
Everyone should be able to do the havan in any of the languages or their mother tongue.

Dedication

Our Reverential Homage

to
SWAMI DAYANAND SARASWATI
(1824-1883)

The Greatest of Vedic scholars of Modern Age

Who put forth the Philosophy of Vedas in the proper perspective and whose monumental works
with their rationality in approach, logic and reasoning, heralded a total philosophical and cultural
regeneration all over the world.

Swami Dayanand Saraswati was the first to standardise the pattern of ‘Daily Havan’ based on
Vedas and other ancient scriptures. The ‘Vedic Havan’ is based on ‘Brahma Yajna’ as given in
Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s work ‘Panch Maha Yajna Vidhi’ whose revised edition was brought
out in the year 1877.

Swami Dayanand was responsible for girls education and widow remarriage. He contributed and
reformed Hindu religion.

This Book is most humbly and devotedly dedicated to Swami Dayanand’s ever-shining glory.

May it serve as beacon light to all the seekers of God’s divine bliss and beatitude.

Acknowledgments

My first introduction to the Vedic Havan was while I was growing up in New Delhi, India. My
father used to conduct a Havan in the Karol Bagh neighborhood every week, and he would
encourage me to join him. We continued this weekly tradition for many years. Even after I left for
college, whenever I would come back home, I would sit with him for a Havan.

As I got older, I became busier with work and family obligations, and there was nearly a 20-year
gap before I could reconnect with the practice of Havan again. It happened after we moved to
Houston in 1992 and started going to the Arya Samaj a few years after. We have now been part
of the Arya Samaj Houston community for more than 25 years and hardly miss a Sunday Havan. It
has had a profound effect on our children growing up, and my daughter was even married at the
Arya Samaj Houston. I thank all the Acharyas, who have been part of Arya Samaj Houston: Late
Mr. Ram Chand Mahajan Ji, Acharya Praveen Gulati Ji, Late Dr. Dilip Vedalankar Ji, Acharya Tana
Ji, Acharya Sone Rao Ji, Acharya Prem Chandra Shridhar Ji, and Acharya Surya Nanda Ji. I learned
a lot from all them, and I will always be indebted to them for their guidance.

The idea of making a simple guide for conducting Havan came to my mind during my son's
wedding in 2016. I consulted several Havan books available to us and tried to simplify the Hindi to
make it accessible to a broader audience. My team of Sheela, Vimla, and Sapna have worked very
hard for the past few years to produce this excellent document. My son, Sidharth, and daughter-
in-law, Seema, took up the task of editing and modernizing the mantras into plain English. They
did a fantastic job and presented it to me for my birthday.

Perhaps most special of all, our grandson Veer calls "Gayatri Mantra" as Nana ka Gana
(grandfather's song). Knowing that the practice of Havan, even in a basic form, lives on for
another generation, makes me immensely happy and proud. I hope to continue improving the
books so that everybody can benefit from Vedic Havan.

Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Minu Garg, who has been equally active in Arya Samaj
Houston and has supported me in turning this book from an idea into reality.
