Problem analysis
My eLearning product will be created for Walden West Outdoor School’s volunteer cabin
leaders. For volunteers and campers to have an effective, fun, and safe volunteering experience,
volunteers must come to camp prepared with foundational skills to lead a group of young
students and follow Walden West safety protocols. An introductory online course completed
before in-person training will allow volunteers time to process information and prepare
Currently, training is done the evening before the campers arrive. Because of this short
time frame, volunteers have trouble processing and retaining information given to them during
in-person training, which is primarily presented to them as a PowerPoint with little interactivity.
Target audience
The intended audience for the learning solution would be high school volunteers. Most
volunteers are recruited from local high schools in the Santa Clara County area. Cabin leaders
are tasked to be positive role models and leaders, knowledgeable in Walden West safety
procedures, and a point of authority. The volunteers, majority being high school sophomores and
seniors, are typically inexperienced when it comes to managing large groups of children. Many
of these volunteers are also new to Walden West’s procedures and policies. Only some may have
knowledge on leadership skills, especially if they are members of clubs or other organizations.
Learning objectives
1. From memory, learners will be able to recall the SPARKLE (SPARKLE stands for
safety, positive attitude, appropriate resources, respect for all, kid centric, leadership, and
empathy) leadership acronym and what each letter represents with 100% accuracy.

Assessment
Assessment of the learners will be done through comprehension checks during and after
the lesson. It will include multiple choice questions, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blanks, and true or
false questions that relate to authentic tasks or scenarios related to becoming a cabin leader. The
assessments will help the learner stay focused, encourage engagement, and allow for a
measurable way to assess if mastery of the learning objective has been achieved.
Instructional strategies
product. Using realistic scenarios that cabin leaders will most likely face on the field keeps the
instruction learner centered. These real-word scenarios will give each learner the chance to
identify, analyze, and resolve situations as they build upon their knowledge in the process. In
addition to problem-based learning, the principles of multimedia design will also be used. For
example, the narration will be done in a conversational tone that delivers instruction in a
