FOREWORD
Your Preussag system has been designed and constructed to meet your particular requirements
and provide you with the best possible protection against Joss and damage by fire.
The equipment is of high quality and is built to last many years but experience has shown that
emergency equipment is very often overlooked and unintentionally neglected. To prevent this
and ensure that the equipment is maintained in first class working conditions, Preussag Fire
Protection Limited has a specialised Service Department available to maintain, test and inspect
your installation at regular intervals. Full details of this service will be supplied upon request.
In your own interest we must also strongly recommend that you notifY us of your intention to
carry out any alterations or extensions to the protected places or equipment so that we can
advise you of any effect this may have on the design of the fire protection system. Similarly
any work required to be done on the system should be carried out by Preussag Fire Protection
Limited who employ fully qualified and competent people for this purpose.
Please note that Preussag Fire Protection Limited will not accept responsibility for any defects
arising from neglected systems or equipment that has not been regularly maintained by them or
by one of their approved agents.
In view of their constant research in the field of Fire Protection the Company would welcome
information regarding the performance of their equipment under operating conditions. All
such information will be treated in strictest confidence.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Preussag Fire Protection Limited recognise its responsibility under Section 6, of the Health
and Safety Act 1974 to ensure that the products which it manufactures, sells or installs are, as
far as is reasonably practicable, without risk to the health and safety of the users. The
following information should be disseminated to all persons using such products.
The information is furnished in good faith based upon technical data and tests, which are
believed to be reliable. Products undergo rigorous quality control checks during manufacture
to ensure that they present no hazards in the use and application for which they are intended.
Technical data and literature which may assist customers in the discharge of their general
duties under Section 2 of the above Act are available on request. Should you require further
information in this context please contact our Sales Office.
Nothing contained in this manual shall form part of any contract made between a customer and
Preussag Fire Protection Limited.
Carbon Dioxide
Dependent upon the application, C0 2 is normally employed at levels of between 35% and. 50%
by volume to produce an oxygen deficiency and thus extinguish a fire. This level of oxygen
reduction is also capable of causing asphyxiation. Fixed systems are therefore designed to
include safeguards which prevent the automatic release of the C0 2 whilst the protected area is
occupied. The users of portable extinguishers should ensure that there is sufficient air to
breathe normally. C0 2 is not generally regarded as having a high intrinsic toxicity and is not
normally considered to produce decomposite products in a fire situation.
CO, cylinders are fitted with safety devices to relieve excess pressure caused by high
temperatures. To avoid these operating, it is recommended that cylinders be located in areas
where the ambient temperature will not exceed 46° Centigrade. Cylinders must not be stored
in direct sunlight.
Certain gaseous extinguishing agents may cause low temperature 'burns' when in contact with
the skin. In such cases the affected area should be thoroughly irrigated with clean water and
afterwards dressed by a trained person.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The central bank C0 2 system installed in this ship protects the following areas:-:-
The Central Bank C0 2 System consists of 95 off 45Kg CO, cylinders located in the
CO, Room.
These cylinders are connected to discharge nozzles within the protected space(s) via
cylinder manifolds and distribution pipework.
A pressure gauge and pressure switch are fitted to the main C0 2 manifold.
The system is designed to discharge the required number of cylinders into each space
protected as follows::-
P .O.D. valve(s) are installed into the C0 2 discharge pipework between the C02
manifold and the discharge nozzles to direct the CO, gas into the space afire. The
following sizes are used for each space:-
Discharge of the CO, is manually accomplished from a control box. There are
control boxes connected to the central bank system. These are located as follows:-
2.6 ALARMS
Various alarms are connected to this system to give warning of CO, discharge, they are
installed as follows:-
They are initiated via a heavy duty relay from switches mounted on the control box
door(s) and P.O.D. valve(s).

TECHNJCAL DESCRIPTION
3 .1. PRINCIPLE
Carbon Dioxide(C02) is a standard commercial product with many other uses and it is
readily available throughout the world.
Cleanliness
Non-Conductivity
It has great dielectric strength and can be applied safely to live electrical
equipment
Penetration
Application
It provides its own pressure for discharging through valves, pipework and
nozzles.
Reducing the oxygen content from the normal 21% in air to 15% will
extinguish most surface fires; for some materials, however, it must be reduced
even lower.

Hazards to Personnel
The dilution of the oxygen in the air, by the CO, concentration that will
extinguish fire, may create atmospheres that will not sustain life. Such
atmospheres will be produced in spaces protected by C0 2 total flooding and
may be produced by any large volume discharge drifting into adjacent low
places.
Fires which can be extinguished or controlled by C02 total flooding methods may be
divided into two categories, namely:-
I. Surface Fires
Machinery spaces, pump rooms, lamp and paint rooms, etc., are spaces likely
to produce surface type fires.
2. Deep-Seated Fires
Fires in general cargo usually come within this category and this type of fire
cannot be extinguished quickly.
The C0 2 will extinguish the active surface burning but the smouldering material
must be allowed to remain in an inert atmosphere for a long period of time to
allow large masses of material to cool.
The C0 2 quantity carried is a limited amount and the best possible use should be
made of that which is available. The effectiveness of the C02 will be increased
by making sure that openings to the space on fire are closed.
It is important that as little delay as possible is allowed before operating the C02
system but the work of checking the location of the fire and the closing of
openings is time well spent.

The pressure within the cylinder varies with changes in ambient temperature; the
pressure increases with rising temperature. At 2 JO C.(70 ° F.) the pressure would be
58.6 Bar (850 lb/in2)
Each cylinder valve incorporates a safety disc designed to rupture and discharge the
CO, contents at a pressure safely below the cylinder test pressure.
Care must be taken, therefore, to ensure that the C0 2 cylinders are not installed in a
position where the temperature is likely to exceed 54 De g. C. (I 30 Deg.F).
Each cylinder is fitted with a valve which can be opened pneumatically (by gas
pressure) or manually when a pressure/manual actuator is fitted to it.
The valve is opened by depressing an actuator rod, the end of which is recessed into
the valve body. The actuator rod is recessed into the body so that the valve cannot be
accidentally operated while the cylinder is being handled during installation and
maintenance.

The Pressure/Manual Actuator is a small piston device which, when pilot gas pressure
is applied, depresses the cylinder valve actuator rod and opens the valve.
Each pressure/manual actuator is fitted with a small lever. Operation of the lever will
discharge C02 from that cylinder only.
The pressure actuators are interconnected by small bore flexible pipes (PILOT CO,
LOOPS), connected to the gas inlet ports of the pressure/manual actuators.
Operating CO, gas can therefore be applied simultaneously to all cylinder valve
pressure/manual actuators.

The C02 gas outlets of the cylinder valves are connected to common manifold pipes
running over the rows of cylinders.
Each cylinder valve gas outlet is connected to the manifold pipe by a 15mm CO, outlet
hose assembly.
Each connection point on the manifold pipe incorporates a check valve to provide for
the removal of one or more cylinders from the bank without rendering the system
inoperative.
If one or more cylinders are to be removed from the bank, the manual actuator levers,
pilot loops and C0 2 outlet hose are detached from the cylinder valve. The pilot loop
ends must be reconnected together using a 3/16" O.D. pilot straight connector. To
ensure pilot gas flow to remaining cylinders.
The pressure-operated distribution (P.O.D.) valve is fitted into the main C02 discharge
pipe between the manifold system and the Engine Room discharge nozzles.
The pilot C0 2 arrangements are such that pilot C0 2 first discharges the main C02
cylinder bank, pressurising the system upstream of the P.O.D. valve; then the pilot CO,
opens the P.O.D.valve, allowing the C0 2 to be discharged to the Engine Room
nozzles.
When the pilot CO, pressure 1s removed from the valve actuator the valve will
automatically close.
The P.O.D valve is provided with a manual operating handwheel. This manual facility
is for emergency use only e.g. in the event of failure of the pilot C0 2 system.
If the handwheel is operated while pilot C0 2 pressure is applied to the valve actuator,
the valve will not close until the handwheel is restored to its original (valve shut)
position.

A switch is fitted to the P.O.D. valve. This switch is wired in parallel with the door
switches on the control boxes, and is fitted to ensure that the alarms operate in the
event of non-operation of the door switch.
When the C0 2 system is pressure operated, pilot C0 7 is conveyed from the source to
the actuators through an individual pipe which is not connected with the main CO, fire
fighting pipework. The pilot C0 2 must, therefore, be vented to atmosphere after the
main C0 2 has discharged.
This small vent assembly is screwed into an unused part of a cylinder valve pressure
actuator or, if necessary, connected into the pilot CO, line.
When fitted, the vent provides a very small leak (bleed) in the pilot C0 2 line. When the
system is operated, pilot CO, commences to bleed away immediately to atmosphere.
The rate at which pilot C0 2 is vented is slow enough to maintain adequate operating
pressure in the pilot line system far in excess of the time taken for the main CO,
discharge.

The system is operated by a supply of C0 2 separate from the main fire extinguishing
C02 . It is stored in a small pilot cylinder installed within the control box. The pilot
cylinder is connected to the main pilot system pipework via two isolation valves
installed within the control box.
One isolation valve is connected via small bore pilot gas pipework to the cylinder bank
to open the required number of cylinders, the other is connected via a separate pilot
gas line to open the relevant P.O.D. valve.
The isolation valves are positioned so that the control box door cannot be closed with
the valves in the open position.
It is also arranged that the control box door will operate a switch when it is in the open
position, to initiate audible and visual alarms.
3.13 ALARMS
Various alarms are installed within the protected space, these are automatically
initiated from the switches mounted on the P.O.D. valves and control boxes.

section of this manual.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
A) On discovering a fire, shut down machinery fuel supplies and ventilating systems; close
all door ventilators and other openings.
C) Open the Engine Room Control Box Door- this will cause the alarms to sound in the
Engine Room.
F) Extinguishing C0 2 gas will be released from the main cylinder bank. The P.O.D. valves
will be opened and C02 will be discharged from the Engine Room nozzles.
H) When pilot pressure gauge within the control box is zero - close both pilot isolation
valves.
NOTES
Allow time for structural cooling before opening Engine Room and ventilating CO,
gas.
In the unlikely event of pilot gas initiation failure. The Engine Room P.O.D. valve
should be opened manually and the required number of cylinders, as detailed in Section
2- Description, should be opened by operation of the manual release lever on the top
of each CO, cylinder as follows:-
- Repeat this for each cylinder until the specified number have been discharged.

A) On discovering a fire, shut down any machinery, stop any ventilation systems and seal
all openings including hatch covers, sounding pipes and parts connected with the
affected cargo.
If tarpaulins and canvas covers are used for sealing opemngs, these should be
thoroughly wetted prior to release of extinguishing gas
Raising the front lever connected to the top valve to the horizontal position.
Lowering the second lever connected to the bottom valve to the horizontal
position.
C) Open the Stop Valve in the C02 Room connecting the C0 2 manifold to the divertor
valves.
D) Discharge C0 2 from the exact number of cylinders shown on the following table for the
INITIAL DISCHARGE:-
Repeat this for each cylinder until the specified number have been discharged.
Continue this procedure until it is certain that the fire is extinguished or until the
supply of C0 2 has been exhausted.
During this procedure, and until arrival in port - KEEP ALL OPENINGS CLOSED
AND TARPAULINS/CANVAS COVERS THOROUGHLY WET.

5.J.FIRE DRILL
It is advisable to assume that a fire has occurred and have the crew perform the
operations that would be necessary to bring the CO, system into action. Clearly,
controls such as the operating levers on the main bank C0 2 cylinders must not be
operated, otherwise C0 2 would be released.
During this exercise it is advisable to take the opportunity to inspect as much of the
installation as is possible for damage or evidence of some derangement.
If the C02 distribution valve is opened, make sure that the valve is closed after the
exercise.
The system should be serviced at least once a year, preferably by Preussag Fire
Protection or Service Agent. The following instructions and maintenance sheets are
for use ifPreussag servicing facilities are not available.
A responsible Ships Officer or ship Repair Manager should be informed that testing is
to be carried out, so that any precaution that may be necessary can be taken.
The following instruction involve high pressure gas. Only qualified or experienced
personnel should be permitted to work on this equipment.

IMPORTANT NOTE
WATER AND GAS UNDER PRESSURE MUST NOT, REPEAT, MUST
NOT WITHOUT TAKING PROPER PRECAUTIONS, BE APPLIED TO
PILOT C0 2 PIPE LINES AS THIS COULD RESULT IN RELEASE OF
CO, AND OPENING OF MAIN DISTRIBUTION VALVE.
Pipe lines throughout should be examined for damage, signs of serious corrosion and
that they are still adequately supported.

Pipe lines should be blown through with compressed air or carbon dioxide to remove
dirt which may have accumulated and to prove them clear. A connection into the main
manifold is provided for this purpose in the C0 2 Room.
While pipes are being blown through, the opportunity should be taken to check that
the nameplates on distribution valves correctly designate the spaces they serve.
5.4. VALVES
Each cylinder should be checked to ascertain that it contains the prescribed quantity of
C0 2. If equipment is available to enable to C0 2 liquid level in each cylinder to be
detected, together with ability to interpret from the detected liquid level the quantity of
C0 2 contained, this work can be carried out with the cylinders in situ.
Alternatively, each cylinder must be weighed to discover the C0 2 content. The gross
and nett weights are to be found stamped around the top of each cylinder. If a cylinder
is found to contain less than 90% of the prescribed quantity of C0 2 it must be
recharged.
When cylinders are check weighed it is necessary to disconnect them and instructions
for disconnection and removal are set out in later paragraphs.
Cylinders should be examined for signs of serious corrosiOn. Cylinder valves and
actuators should be checked for damage and wear.
Examine main C0 2 loops and pilot C02 loops for signs of damage. Inspect pilot C0 2
pipe lines and the CO, release equipment in the control boxes.
5.6 TESTING
Checks and Pressure Tests should be carried out as detailed in the Marine Maintenance
Sheets enclosed with this manual

WARNING
REMOVAL
Make sure that the safety pin securing the manual release lever on the pressure
actuator is in position and the lever cannot be moved.
Slacken the upper coupling nut which secures the discharge hose to the check valve
manifold above the cylinder.
Completely unscrew the lower coupling nut which secures the connecting loop to the
cylinder valve gas outlet.
Completely unscrew the two pilot loops connected into the top of the cylinder valve.
Loosen and remove the required section of cylinder strapping. Caution should be
exercised as the cylinder strapping may support other cylinders.
Remove one cylinder at a time. Set each cylinder in such a position that it will not fall
over and damage the valve.
If the cylinder(s) are to be transported remove the actuator lever only from the top of
the cylinder valve, by loosening the stainless steel securing grub screw, and fit a small
protection cap to the valve gas outlet, and a large cylinder protection cap to enclose
the entire valve.
NOTE:
The pilot loop ends must be re-connected together using a 3/16" OlD pilot straight
connector, to ensure flow of pilot gas to the remaining cylinders.
The check valves in the manifold prevent loss of C0 2 from the broken connection if the
system is operated.

RE-INSTALLATION
If system is pull cable operated, ensure re-fitting of actuator lever and removal
of actuator lever locking pin.
Remove the cylinder. Place the cylinder in such a position that it will not fall over and
damage the valve. If necessary lay the cylinder down.
If the cylinder is to be transported for recharging, fit the small protection cap to the
cylinder valve gas outlet, and the large cylinder valve protection cap.

THE PILOT VENT VALVE IS DESIGNED TO FIT THE PRESSURE I MANUAL ACTUATOR OR
3/15 OD BUNDY FITTINGS. THE VALVE SHOULD BE INSTALLED TO THE FURTHEST
PRESSURE I MANUAL ACTUATOR FROM THE PILOT LINE LEAD IN CONNECTION.
IF MULTI - PILOT RELEASE IS REQUIRED - FOR EXAMPLE VHEN TVO OR MORE
SPACES ARE BEING PROTECTED FROM THE SAME C02 CYLINDER SANK THEN A PILOT
VENT VALVE SHOULD BE FITTED TO EACH PILOT RELEASE SYSTEM. VHEN PILOT
NON-RETURN VALVES ARE USED IN THE PILOT SYSTEM THE VENT VALVE SHOULD
ALSO BE INSTALLED YHERE THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF A TRAPPED PRESSURE

REPLACE VENT VALVE AND APPLY A PROPRIETARY LEAK-TEK SOLUTION AT POINT X.
CHECK FOR BUBBLES - IF IN DOUBT REPLACE THE VENT VALVE.
