SCHEME OF WORK
Programme Title HND Business Level 4
Unit Number & Unit 4: Lecturer
Title Management
and Operations
Teaching Weeks 10 weeks Hours per 4 hours/week
session/week

Unit Descriptor
The aim of this unit is to help students understand the difference between the function of a
manager and the role of a leader. Students will consider the characteristics, behaviours and
traits which support effective management and leadership. In addition, this unit will
introduce the concept of operations as both afunction and a process which all organisations
must adopt to conduct business. Students will be introduced to contemporary and historical
theories and concepts which will support their learning for this unit.
On successful completion of this unit students will have developed sufficient knowledge and
understanding of how management and operations make a positive, efficient and effective
contribution to an organisation at a junior level. This could be in the role of a team leader or
managing a specific aspect of an operation function and/or process. Underpinning all
aspects of the content for this unit you will consider topics under
two broad headings: management and operations.

DGHE Policy and Regulations

This Scheme of Work must be read in conjunction with the assignment brief and relevant handbooks
and policies that outline regulations of the College. These are the Student Handbook, Assessment
and Internal Verification Policy, Academic Malpractice Policy, Attendance Policy, Academic Appeals
Policy, Student Complaint Policy, and Welfare Guide. Copies of these are available from College
Management and are published for your convenience on the College VLE Moodle. All policies
regarding attendance, academic misconduct and assessment regulations will be strictly enforced.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF AND GUIDANCE

Purpose of this assessment

This assignment is designed to assess the learner’s knowledge of the principles of management
and operations, enabling them to identify and use fundamental tools and concepts that
incentivise leadership, managerial and operational improvements within organisations, in order to
reap business benefits.

Task 1Scenario
You are a DGHE student and as a part of course requirements, you have to produce a report, where you are
required to analyse the business case of General Electric (GE). The purpose of the report is to differentiate
between a role of a leader and the function of a manager, and to apply the role of a leader in different
management contexts.
General Electric is one of the most prominent organisations in the USA and it was one of the 12 original
companies to be registered as a public corporation. Throughout its 100 years of history, GE has gone
through significant market, competitive and structural changes, and has been renowned for its strong
culture of shaping leaders from within. Henry Lawrence Culp Jr. is the CEO of General Electric since 2018,
and the first-outsider to run GE in history.
Task 1
This report should include the following sections:
1. Examine specific situations in your business case, where various managerial skills and
leadership qualities (or lack of them) were demonstrated by company’s top managers.
Your analysis should focus on the actions and achievements of Jack Welch, his successor -
Jeff Immelt and the current GE CEO - Henry Lawrence Culp Jr.
2. You should identify and analyse particular strengths and weaknesses of the respective
leaders in various situations, link specific manager/leader’s actions to different theories
and models of approach, including situational leadership, systems leadership, and
contingency.
Critically analyse at least two of these theories.

Must Demonstrate fulfilment of LO1 and LO2

Submission Format
The submission format is of a business report of 2,000 words (excluding table of contents,
introduction and conclusion and appendices). You will not be penalised for exceeding this
number.
A useful guide on structuring business reports can be found in the University of Leicester
website, available: https://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/ld/resources/writing/writing-resources/reports
Task 2 Scenario
Assume you are part of the Human Resources (HR) department of an organisation of your choice.
As part of the company’s commitment to excellence through the continuous improvement and
training of their staff, they have asked you to prepare informative didactic material that will used
in their corporate training programmes.
The organisation is seeking to identify talented individuals who will be groomed for influential
positions. As such, it is important to identify and define key behavioural characteristics and traits
related to the role of managers and leaders within business and organisational environments.
Task 2
This report should include the following sections:

Working individually, select a renowned organisational leader (cannot be the same as Task 1), and
prepare an engaging and informative PowerPoint presentation where you will showcase his/her
personal leadership profile and the achievements he/she accomplished through management and
operation performance improvements.

The presentation slides should cover the following areas:

1. Define and explain the roles of a manager and a leader.

2. Include specific business and individual examples to show different types of behaviours:
a. An overview of the individual’s biography and career highlights.
b. An introduction to the key operations of the organisation he/she transformed
c. An evaluation how the internal and external operation management
environments created an atmosphere that allowed for that particular individual
and his respective leadership style to flourish.
d. How operational efficiencies of a given organisation/company improved to
successfully meet business objectives, using appropriate management and
leadership approaches.
e. Conclusions and supported recommendations for future improvements to be
taken by the leader and the respective organisation, taking onto account how
different factors affect the business environment and wider community.

NOTE: You must select a business leader for your research. Politicians and celebrities cannot be
used. The subject of the presentation should be approved by your lecturer.

Must Demonstrate fulfilment of LO3 & LO4

Submission Format
The submission is in the form of an individual PowerPoint presentation - submitted to Turnitin, as
one document, including the presentation slides and speaker notes. You are required to make
effective use of PowerPoint headings and subsections as appropriate. You should make use of
engaging presentation styles and content delivery methods, including video/audio and/or images.
Your research should be referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a
bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit is 1,500 words,
including speaker notes. You will not be penalised for exceeding this limit.
Note: The Programme Leader or Programme Manager may, at their discretion, request a
supplementary 20-minute PowerPoint presentation with 10 minutes questions about any written
work submitted as an assessment, where the lecturer suspects that the work is not the students’
own.
