Dr. José Rizal is one of the most revered figures in Philippine history. As a Filipino, I admire him as
an individual because Rizal can serve as a worthwhile model and inspiration to every Filipino.
Throughout his life, he valued nationalism and patriotism, respect for parents, love for siblings, and
loyalty to friends, and maintained a sense of chivalry.
It is important to study Rizal’s work since Jose Rizal was the founder of the country’s nationalism
and had significantly contributed to the current condition of the nation, it is only right that Filipinos,
especially the youth, know about and learn to imbibe the great ideals for which the hero died. It teaches
nationalism and patriotism which involves the desire to attain freedom and political independence,
especially by a country under foreign power, while patriotism denotes proud devotion and loyalty to one’s
nation.

2. Write the complete name of Rizal and its origin. (10 points)
Dr. José Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonso Realonda is the complete name of Rizal. He was called Dr.
because he studied and passed all his subjects in Medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid on June
21, 1884. The name “Jose” was given to him by his mother to glorify St. Joseph who was born March 19,
1861. The name “Protacio” came from the calendar because everyone who was born on the 19 th of June
has to have that name based on the Catholic Calendar which is Gervacio Y Protacio and Sta. Juliana
Falconeri. The surname “Mercado” was used by his ancestor, Domingo Lam-ko and Mercado means
market. The surname “Rizal” was chosen by Don Francisco to fulfill the command of Governor General
Narcisco Claveria last November 11, 1849 that Filipinos should changer their surname. The surname
“Realonda” came from his Mother’s surname. The surname “Alonzo” was a deep-rooted surname of his
Mother’s family.

3. Why Rizal still not happy on Santo Thomas school even he received many awards from it. (5

 Rizal was not satisfied with the system of education at the university.
The Dominican system was obsolete and repressive. He disapproved of how
instruction in science was done in the university and how Spanish professors treated Filipino
students who had the potential to excel in class.

 Medicine was not Rizal's true vocation.

He found out later that he was made not for medicine, but for the arts.

4. Imagine that you are Rizal and you have a sister, what could be the lessons that you are going to
advice as a brother? (5 points)

If I were Jose Rizal, the lessons that I am going to advice to my sister are:

o Focus on your goal/s

 Jose Rizal’s sole motto is fighting injustice in society.

o Keep personal life away from work

It is important to keep distractions away from every workday. Rizal was so
focused on the work that he did not allow loved ones or even his own preferences or
emotions come in the way.

o Be yourself
Your values, hard work and personal ethics play an important part in its growth.
So be proud and own it responsibly.

o Use your time to the fullest

Just like Jose Rizal, you need to spend much of your time in self-improvement
via self-education. You too can take a leaf from his life and become a better version
of yourself every day.

5. Create a three (3) stanzas poem compose of four (4) lines that reflects to a novel Noli Me
Tangere? (15 points)

The lack of thought impregnates our air.

We promote ourselves through groups and individuals,
We pretend to be honorable but are deceitful,
Paving the way to social fame and glory.

By thoughts and acts we pursue social achievements,

Exhibiting selfishness, chaos and insecurity.
Their protests to gain our freedoms unrecognized,
Humans who fail to correct our inhumane acts.

All while our country rivers crest with blood,

Peaked by the sacrifices of those socially conscious.
Their tired and weary bodies put out of sight,
Discarded by the very ones they loved so much.
