THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE I

PURPOSE: We identify and use the “s” rules to complete and make
affirmative sentences in present simple tense. (Identificamos y
usamos las reglas de la S final para completar y hacer oraciones
afirmativas en presente simple)

The Present Simple Tense


We use the present simple to express habits, facts, thoughts and feelings. It is also
used with general statements and actions that are repeated. It is formed with the
base form of the verb, except the third person singular where you have to use the "s"
rules*.

Key words: often, always, never, every day, month,..., usually, sometimes,


rarely, on Mondays, Tuesdays,...

I.- AFFIRMATIVE FORM II.- NEGATIVE FORM


I like oranges.

You play soccer in the morning. I don't like oranges.

He wants an ice cream. You don’t play soccer in the morning.

She likes hot dogs. He doesn’t want an ice cream.

It drinks milk. She doesn’t like hot dogs.

It doesn’t drink milk.


We hate Math.
We don't hate Math.
You have a cold.
You don't have a cold
They go to school.
NOTE: We have to use the “S” rules with He – She - It They don't go to school.

NOTE: We use don’t with I – You – We – You – They

We use doesn’t with He – She - It

III.- INTERROGATIVE FORM SHORT ANSWERS


Do you play soccer in the morning? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

Does he want an ice cream? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.

Does she like hot dogs? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.

Does it drinks milk? Yes, it doesn’t. / No, it doesn’t.

Do they go to school? Yes, they do. / No, they don’t.

NOTE: We use Do with I – You – We – You – They

We use Does with He – She - It

THE “S” RULES: HE – SHE – IT /affirmative sentences)


I.- We ususlly add s athe end of the verb:
play – plays work - Works read - reads
II.- When the verb ends in s, ss, sh, ch, x, o, we add es:
passes - watches – finishes do - does  go - goes 
III.- When the verb ends in a consonant + y, we change y to ies:
study - studies  carry - carries    
Exceptions:
have – has be - is
