Program notes
1. Ring the Bells- Here's a carol that has been a perennial favorite for solo singers for
years. This festive setting captures the spirit of the season with solid part-writing
and a bell-like piano part. Incorporating the classic American tune “I Heard the
Bells on Christmas day” The orchestration is lavish and appropriate to the theme
while the optional handbell.
2. Canticle of Winter- “When gentle snow starts falling, and quiet winds breathe low,
the song of winter beauty sings on and on again." A sensitive and introspective text
paired with an artistic accompaniment, long flowing melodic lines, and gorgeous
harmonic textures make this the perfect selection for our December concert. The
Big Harmonies expressed throughout the piece make this a very dramatic piece
3. Salve Regina - With its distinct harmonies Salve Regina is our highlight piece, it's
the hardest and most loved piece for this advanced women choir. This piece was
written for the 2010 Tolosa (Spain) Choral Contest, this hymn to the Virgin Mary
uses full sound and dense harmonies to celebrate Mary's gift to the world. The
composer's gift for crafting timeless melodies is apparent in this work.
4. Where are you Christmas- From the hit movie “How the grinch stole Christmas”
featuring Jim Carrey. In the movie, the Grinch is a person that hates Christmas so
much that he plans to steal it from the who’s of Whoville and later grows to learn
that Christmas is about spending it with people you love. This is a fun little tune
that Cindy Lou sings in the movie and is also recorded by Faith Hill for the movie’s
soundtrack.
5. Zat You, Santa Claus?- The fabulous "holiday swing" feel and humorous rhyming
lyrics of this song from 1953 are so hip, so cool, no wonder it was recorded by the
likes of Louis Armstrong, Garth Brooks, Brian Setzer, and Harry Connick, Jr. this is
a fun jazz standard arranged for treble singers
6. O Tannenbaum- Calling to mind compositions written for traditional men's singing
societies in Germany, the harmonies and lyric character of this arrangement are as
one might hear in a Christkindlmarkt in Northern Europe. A tenor solo with
background hums from the ensemble in the second verse offers a satisfying contrast
to the rest of the work. This version of “oh Christmas tree” is truly beautiful.
7. Jingle bells (sort of )- The horse is literally dancing across the snow in this crazy,
mixed-up, mixed-meter, fun arrangement of Jingle Bells! At first, the words are the
same as the ones we all know, then... "The melody's the same; the rhythms, they are
not, the words are sort of different, but we'll give it all we've got!”
8. Ubi Caritas- Originally published for mixed voices, this stunning work has reached
a large audience in a very short time and has been published in SSAA and TTBB
voicings to meet the growing demand. The reviews are in - it is an exceptionally
strong choice for every a cappella choir! It is simplistic yet effective.
9. Mary did you know- Originally this arrangement was performed by the a cappella
group Pentatonix. This is a simple arrangement of a well-known tune. May be sung
a cappella or accompanied. Ideal for pop/jazz or because of the beautiful layered
vocal textures.
10. Light- "Day after day we'll find the will to find our way knowing that the darkest
skies will someday see the sun... there will be light!" This moving ballad from the
groundbreaking musical is perfect as that show-stopping moment in any concert.
With a text that tackles the tough topic of mental health and strength, this piece can
9

create important talking points for group unity and support in the toughest of times.
Strong lyrics and soaring vocals make this an emotional concert piece in a
powerhouse set that can spread encouragement and light to all.
11. All on a Silent Night- This beautiful arrangement incorporates Silent Night with an
original melody, lending a delightful ambiance to this beloved classic. The flowing
piano and cello accompaniments enhance the lyrical melodies and rich harmonies.
And is a holiday favorite.
12. Text me Merry Christmas- It's a Christmas song for the selfie generation! The vocal
group Straight No Chaser teamed up with actor/singer Kristen Bell for this cute
number that will be a fantastic holiday novelty for your choir! It includes a texting
pantomime, with spoken dialogue between a guy and a girl, that will make your
audience LOL! "So, please remember this December to fully charge your phone."
