 The refrigeration industry encompasses residential and commercial industrial air

conditioning, food storage, and cooling. Refrigeration work requires certified knowledge and
specialized tools to work with specific equipment. Cooling equipment uses electricity,
specialized components and controlled chemicals and gases to produce cooling of enclosed
spaces. Refrigeration technicians and specialists install, repair and maintain refrigeration
equipment for employers, customers and contracted jobs in a service capacity.

Compressor
 A refrigeration compressor is a component of a compressor in an air conditioning,
refrigeration or cooling unit that pumps refrigerant through the refrigeration system. It draws
in cold liquid refrigerant gas from another component, the evaporator, compressing the cold
gas, warming it and pushing it through coils to release heat. The refrigerant gas is cycled
through the equipment to control air temperature according to a metered set point. HVAC
technicians maintain compressors by ensuring coils are undamaged and free from debris,
checking the metering device isn't malfunctioning and clearing moisture from the system to
prevent compressor damage or burn out.

Condenser
 A refrigeration condenser is a component of a refrigeration unit that receives refrigerant
gas from the compressor, compresses and liquefies it and sends it further through the system
in high pressure heated form. Condensers have a coil, compressor, fan and control switch.
The condenser with its compressor adds heat by compressing refrigerant and pushing it
through tubes, then on to an evaporator in warm liquid form. HVAC technicians check the
operation of condensers and their electrical connections and sources during troubleshooting
when equipment is malfunctioning.

Evaporator
 A refrigeration evaporator is a component of a refrigeration unit. It receives warm liquid
refrigerant from the condenser coils, cools it down and allows condensation to evaporate and
sends it on further through the refrigeration system. Evaporators work with fans to cool down
hot gases as they move through the system. HVAC technicians troubleshoot evaporators if
there is a temperature problem with the refrigeration unit, clean coils and check for leaking
refrigerant.

Metering Device
 A refrigerant metering device controls the quantity of refrigerant running through the
system. It sends heated refrigerant from the condenser in the right amounts to the evaporator
under pressure in cooled form and completes the cycle of refrigerant through the refrigeration
system. HVAC technicians test metering devices and clean metering devices after removing
refrigerant from the system if there are operating problems.

Electrical Testing Meters

 HVAC technicians use meters to test electrical connections on refrigeration units during
troubleshooting. Voltmeters measure voltage in an electrical circuit, ohmeters measure
electrical resistance and ammeters measure electrical current. Multimeters are devices that
combine voltmeters, ohmeters and ammeters in one tool.
