1- Introduction:
A doodle is an unfocused drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple
drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes. Stereotypical
examples of doodling are found in school notebooks, often in the margins, drawn by students daydreaming or
losing interest during class. Other common examples of doodling are produced during long telephone
conversations if a pen and paper are available.[1]
Popular kinds of doodles include cartoon versions of teachers or companions in a school, famous TV or comic
characters, invented fictional beings, landscapes, geometric shapes and patterns, textures, banners with legends,
and animations made by drawing a scene sequence in various pages of a book or notebook.[1]
The research basically studies the ability of using awareness, may be a simple way to improve memory skills to
create new designs suitable for printing design (decorative) and fashion design (structure) by draping on
mannequin inspired from the elements of doodles art. And in the same time using three types of decorative
fashion design by fabric itself (printing design), construction details, and decorative trims to produce the final
product garments combination by natural knitting fabrics to make the new trends in fashion from doodle art.

History study:
The word doodle first appeared in the early 17th century to mean a fool or simpleton.[1] It may derive from the
German Dudeltopf or Dudeldop, meaning simpleton or noodle (literally "nightcap").[2]
The meaning "fool, simpleton" is intended in the song title "Yankee Doodle", originally sung by British colonial
troops prior to the American Revolutionary War. This is also the origin of the early eighteenth century verb to
doodle, meaning "to swindle or to make a fool of". The modern meaning emerged in the 1930s either from this

17

meaning or from the verb "to dawdle", which since the seventeenth century has had the meaning of wasting
time or being lazy.
In the movie Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Deeds mentions that "doodle" was a word made up to describe
scribblings to help a person think. According to the DVD audio commentary track, the word as used in this
sense was invented by screenwriter Robert Riskin. Internet giant Google has given a new dimension to the word
by having "doodles" in its main page on certain occasions.[3]
Doodles and Awareness:
Do we occasionally find ourself “zoning out” when listening to a boring speaker? Do you find yourself
forgetting most of what was said during a class or lecture? This is an all too common problem for many people,
but there may be a simple way to improve memory skills while retaining more of what was said at a meeting or
lecture. An interesting study published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology showed that doodling while
listening to a speaker helps listeners retain more of what was said.
According to a study published in the scientific journal Applied Cognitive Psychology, doodling can aid a
person's memory by expending just enough energy to keep one from daydreaming, which demands a lot of the
brain's processing power, as well as from not paying attention. Thus, it acts as a mediator between the spectrum
of thinking too much or thinking too little and helps focus on the current situation. The study was done by
Professor Jackie Andrade, of the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth, who reported that
doodlers in her experiment recalled 7.5 pieces of information (out of 16 total) on average, 29% more than the
average of 5.8 recalled by the control group made of non-doodlers.[2]
Those doodles that many people put down on paper when they’re bored may help to improve memory skills
according to a new study. Find out why you may want to have a doodle pad handy at your next lecture or
class.[4]
In that study, fourty participants were asked to listen to a tape recorded message which included specific names
and places. None of the participants knew they would be given a memory test. One group was encouraged to fill
in shapes on a piece of paper, similar to doodling, while listening to the message while the others were told
simply to listen. The results? The doodlers remembered more names and places than those who listened to the
message without doodling.[5]
How might doodling help to improve memory skills? Although it’s not clear exactly how doodling enhances
recall, researchers believe that keeping the hands busy may keep the mind from wandering. In other words,
doodling can improve concentration and focus. Plus, the act of doodling doesn’t seem to detract from the
listening process since it’s a mindless activity, unlike the creation of a planned piece of artwork. If you find that
information goes in one ear and out the other while you’re lost in a daydream, doodling can help to redirect you
back to the present.
Another possible way doodling could help to improve memory skills is by promoting interaction with the
environment. A previous study showed that learning and memory skills were significantly improved when
students used hand gesturing while learning new math skills. Gesturing and doodling both involve some
movement and interaction which could lead to better focus and attention.[6]
Unfortunately, doodling can also be interpreted by others as a sign of boredom or a lack of interest in what’s
being said. Despite the fact that it can help to improve memory skills, it’s not something you want to do when
you’re at an important business meeting or listening to a speech made by your boss; but keeping a pad of paper
and pencil handy for doodling has its benefits. Doodling may help you stay awake during a boring class or
lecture while allowing you to retain more of what was said. Plus, you never know what unique artistic
masterpieces you’ll create with that doodle pad and pencil.[7,8]

Doodles and symbols:

Doodling allows the unconscious to render in symbolic expression. Symbols have universal as well as personal
meaning. When you are stuck for an answer to a problem or looking for creative innovation, the technique of
doodling will unleash the hidden symbolic powers of the unconscious mind.
Doodling essentially allows our intuitive feelings to express themselves in pictorial symbolic form. Interpreting
these symbols can help to unveil meanings that are not apparent to our linear mind. A symbol conveys an entire
thought in one image. Language depends upon a linear procession of symbols to convey a thought. While
doodling, words may form themselves, and these should be accepted. But, for the most part, doodling allows the
unconscious to come to the surface without judgment or critical analysis from the conscious mind. To practice
the art of doodling do the following:
 Focus on something that you are attempting to create or resolve. Hold the initial idea or desire in the
mind and allow yourself to go into a blank stare or soft focus, preferably on a neutral background (the
sky, a white wall, neutral carpet). As ideas and feelings come to the mind simply doodle them onto a
piece of clean white paper.
 Allow yourself to focus exclusively on an idea and discuss it with a friend. While you are discussing it
doodle on a piece of clean white paper. Continue to doodle as you talk and listen. Don’t interpret or
inhibit what you are drawing.[9,10]
Some people are prolific doodlers when they are talking on the telephone, sitting at a meeting, attending a
lecture or sitting in any passive environment. This doodling can reveal important and profound information
about how the person was feeling at the time, or, according to Jung, latent emotional conflicts or unexpressed
feelings. In truth, no one can interpret our doodling except ourselves. Though certain symbols appear to have
universal applications in the deep collective unconscious, how we experience these symbolic expressions in our
own life is unique to each of us, as shown in fig. (1).[9]

Fig.(1) Some symbols from Doodle art in one sheet.

Elements of Doodels:
When doodling just allow your hands to follow your impulse. It’s best if you can go into a mild trance and
disengage the conscious mind. In some disciplines this is called automatic writing. The difference is that

19
International journal of Science Commerce and Humanities Volume No 2 No 2 February 2014

automatic writing tends to focus on words in sequence. Here we simply want to the engage the unconscious
mind in an imaginary way and record the images that are brought to the surface.[9]
The following some of elements of Doodles art:
- Numbers: Doodling can also include numbers. Numbers are far more than a convenient measure of the
physical world. In ancient traditions they were considered to be the primal organizing principle that gives
structure to the universe. They are powerful creative symbols. By studying the creative power of numbers we
can get in touch with the archetypal concepts that are revealed in each number.
- Abstract shapes: doodle is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a person’s attention is
otherwise occupied elsewhere. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning
or may just be abstract shapes. For example, draw abstract Tortoise as a doodle art as shown in fig. (2).[11]

Fig.(2) Draw abstract Tortoise as a Doodle Art.

- Repetitive: The repetitive symbols of hearts, flowers, animals, cartoons, gratitude symbols, stars, angels and
fairies represent to me that my artwork is all about healing the planet and reinforcing world peace through my
own energy. It is the emotional “I” in form and colour.
A doodle is not handwriting, but a collection of scribbles of blobs, dots, lines, and squiggles made over and
over again repetitively. Usage geometric shapes and texture to fill paper by lines, maybe resolve some
problems.
- Flow: If you would like to try your hand at Doodle Art, spend time with pen and paper, be present in the
moment, and go with the flow. Meditation, praying, nature walks, feelings of gratitude, love and peace will
still your ego and allow creativity.[12]
- Vision: The vision you invoke in the creativity of your doodles will be a testimony to your life’s purpose. As a
rosebud opens, the beauty, talent and essence unfold to create a better world. When you are the best you can
be, you open the space for others to be the best that they can be. Remember, your life is the size of your vision
so when you get a chance, make those doodles life-sized and if you need to, use a magnifying glass to see
them bigger.
- Value: Value “the void”– the space between words and thoughts and the silence of the world – to find the part
of the universe that wants to talk to you in signs, symbols, pictures and numbers. This “letting go” galvanizes
change… so be it.[12]
- Re-create: People tend to re-create the same patterns or designs while their minds are exercised elsewhere.
There are some people who do not make these little pictures at all; they are said to be well-controlled, direct,
precise, and straight to the point in their manner at all times.[13]
- Usage common Doodles: Patterns, Stars, Musical Notes, Eyes, Wheels, Snakes, Hearts, Faces, Birds,
Animals, Flowers, Frames, Dots, Circles, Words, Fences, Trees, Names, Houses, and Arrows as shown in fig.
(2).

Fig. (3) Design of doodle design usage Doodle symbols.

- Space: Design in blank space to full of by lines to create doodle design.

- Colour, shading, and lines: Doodles are sometimes created in colour or several colours and may be drawn
almost anywhere at any time. As a rule, doodlers tend to draw in the same colour as their normal pen. Some
people, however, like to use different colour as they doodle. The famous colours used in doodle art are Red,
Brown, Gray, Black, Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple, Violet, and Lilac as shown in fig. (3).[7]
But what is doodling? How is it different from sketching? I would say that doodling is when you draw without
any clear purpose or outcome. Mainly you just let your hand move and follow it's fancy. Or you may try to draw
something but you aren't too worried about realism. I would put it under the "expressionism" category of art.
Doodling doesn't have to be done with traditional drawing materials either. You can doodle with paint, fibers,
clay - wherever your imagination takes you.[14]

In final, the surprising increase in the use of Doodles themes over the decades shows how ever-present and
deeply rooted they are in the collective memory of the mind. A doodle is more than a fashion statement or mere
exoticism. It derives its greatest strength from the evocative power of its many manifestations.
The main objects of research are the values and elements of Doodle art, as the newest and an active source of
awareness creativity by Doodle art units. As well as applying final designs to actual garments by using different
knitted fabrics.

4-Conclusion:
- Awareness is key to creativity. Designers have to learn most of all to keep their eyes open, to develop their
skills of observation, and to absorb visual ideas, blend them, and translate them into printing and fashion
design that their customers will like.
- Doodle art depend on the awareness to draw for solve problems or memory test, and a doodle art just training
for awareness to creative new designs from all experiences in all life. But practice and observation make a
person more aware, sensitive, and confident for this reasons the Doodle art are the best training for creativity.
- Designers must carry sketchbooks to jot down ideas whenever and wherever they find them to keep it.
