Storage Spaces
 Windows 8 can combine several disks into a single pool of storage
for easier management and resiliency against failure
 Pool can contain variety of physical disks with different sizes and
connected to computer in different ways
 Spaces are created from these pools, behave just like physical disks

SEA – Training and Quality Assurance (Samsung Confidential) 129 Change I Challenge I Create I Competitiveness
Storage Spaces (continued)
 “Thin provisioning” allows space to be larger than the pool it was
created from, through the way space is reserved
 Action Center notifies when more physical drives need to be added
 To add new drives, customer only has to plug them in and add them
to existing pool; Storage Spaces then handles automatically

SEA – Training and Quality Assurance (Samsung Confidential) 130 Change I Challenge I Create I Competitiveness
Storage Space Resiliency
 “Resiliency” refers to protecting data from loss of a physical disk
 Two basic types of resiliency: mirroring and parity
 Mirroring stores complete copies of data on 2 or 3 disks
 Parity records redundancy information used to regenerate lost data
– More capacity efficient, higher processing overhead
– Suited for large files with infrequent updates

Mirroring Parity
SEA – Training and Quality Assurance (Samsung Confidential) 131 Change I Challenge I Create I Competitiveness
Storage Space Resiliency (continued)
 Physical disks in pool not visible to other components or apps;
if disk fails, that failure is completely shielded
