MID EXAM
Note:
1. Solve all problems
2. No credit for incorrect answers
3. The examination is closed book but two page formulas, Tables and Figures are allowed

1. Derive 2-D flow of water through soil equation use all assumption and sketch if necessary)

2. A two-layered soil shown in Figure 1a.The relation between time and q is shown in Figure
1b. Using the numerical method, determine the distribution of excess pore water pressure
after 10 days from the start of loading. Use t=10 days

Figure 1a
Figure 1b

3. A 3-m thick clay layer is drained at the top and bottom and has some sand drains. The
given data are CV( for vertical drainage)=9.3x 103 cm2/yr; kv=kh; dw=0.5m;de=3m;
rw=rs ( i.e., no smear at the periphery of drain wells).
It has been estimated that a given uniform surcharge would cause a total consolidation
settlement of 220 mm without the sand drains. Calculate the consolidation settlement of the
clay layer with the same surcharge and sand drains at time t=0, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 year.

4. Figure 2 represents a steady state one dimensional seepage situation in which the upstream
and downstream water levels are maintained constant. The container in which the soil
(permeability kU = 1.2 x 10-5 m/sec, and porosity nU = 0.5, kL = 0.6 x 10-5 m/sec and nL =
0.3) have been placed consists of two sections having different diameters. The areas of the
upper (AU) and lower (AL) sections are 21cm2 and 11cm2 respectively.
(a) Determine the rate of flow through the soil.
(b) Calculate heads of upper and lower section of the soil
(c) Calculate the actual velocity of flow through the upper and lower section of soil.
(d) Plot the total head, pressure head and elevation head along the tube.
(e) Plot the velocity profile along the tube.

(Hint: Firstly it is necessary to establish an arbitrary datum from which the elevation head may be
measured. Let this datum be located a distance of 4cm below the lower boundary of the soil.)
