Battery Safety Notes
WARNING!
Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries contain dangerous voltages, currents and corrosive
material. Battery installation, maintenance, service and replacement must be performed
only by authorized personnel.

Chemical Hazards
The electrolyte in Nickel Cadmium batteries, consisting of a dilute caustic potash solution with a lithium hy-
droxide component, is harmful to the skin and eyes.

To avoid injury:
• The servicing and connection of batteries shall be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, personnel
knowledgeable of batteries and required safety precautions.
• Always wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and a protective vest when working near batteries. Remove all metallic
objects from hands and neck.
• Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep all open flames and sparks away from batteries.
• Use tools with insulated handles, do not rest any tools on top of batteries.
• Wear protective clothing (insulated gloves, eye protection, etc.) when installing, maintaining, servicing, or replacing
batteries.
• If any battery emission contacts the skin, wash immediately and thoroughly with water. Follow your company’s
approved chemical exposure procedures.
• Neutralize any spilled battery emission with plenty of water. If necessary, use sand to soak up the spill before diluting
with water. Report a chemical spill using your company’s spill reporting structure and seek medical attention if
necessary.
• Always replace batteries with those of an identical type and rating. Never install old or untested batteries.
• Do not charge batteries in a sealed container. Each individual battery should have at least 0.5 inches of space
between it and all surrounding surfaces to allow for convection cooling.
• All battery compartments must have adequate ventilation to prevent accumulation of potentially dangerous gas.
Ventilation should prevent trapped hydrogen gas pockets from exceeding a 1% concentration as per regulation 70E
of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).
• Prior to handling the batteries, touch a grounded metal object to dissipate any static charge that may have developed
on your body.
• Never use uninsulated tools or other conductive materials when installing, maintaining, servicing, or replacing
batteries.
• Use special caution when connecting or adjusting battery cabling. If an improperly connected or unconnected battery
cable contacts an unintended surface, arcing, fire, or a possible explosion can result.
• Replace immediately any batteries that show signs of cracking, leaking, or swelling. Batteries should be replaced by
authorized personnel using batteries of identical type and rating.

Equipment Cautions
• Do not operate NiCd and lead-acid batteries in the same room. NiCd emissions will neutralize the lead-acid solution,
rendering the battery useless.
• Overcharging the battery can result in a loss of capacity and excess release of gas.

Recycling and Disposal Instructions

Spent or damaged batteries are considered environmentally unsafe. Always recycle used batteries or dispose of the
batteries in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations.

NI-CD-XLUCNT-CASE
1.0 Setup and Commissioning
Alpha Technologies’ Nickel Cadmium Translucent Pocket Plate batteries are built in accordance with
IEC 60 623, EN60 623 and DIN 40 771 specifications and are designed to provide battery backup
power to support a variety of industrial powering applications.
There are three types of batteries available:

Duration Description

storage
KM/P (Medium) 5 min-5 hours Designed to support various switchgear
applications.
KH/P (High) 1 sec-90 minutes Designed for start up and UPS applications.

Always comply with the assembly drawings, circuit diagrams and other separate instructions. Any
plugs which are fitted to the cell opening for transportation must be removed. When batteries are
supplied filled and charged check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, top up as directed in section
5.2.
Check cell connectors and flexible cables to ensure they are firmly seated. Terminal nuts and
connectors must be firmly seated. If necessary, tighten with a torque spanner (torque loading for
M10:70in-lb (8Nm); M16:177in-lb (20Nm); M20:221in-lb (25Nm).

Before putting batteries into service for the first time:

For batteries that are... Do this...

Filled and charged Charge for 5 hours at the rated charging current I5..
I5 = C/5 Amperes,
where I5 = current (Ampere) and
C = nominal capacity of the battery (Ah)

Unfilled and uncharged 1. Fill batteries with the appropriate electrolyte up to the lower
electrolyte level mark.
2. Let stand for 5 hours.
. Charge for 15 hours at the rated charging current I5.
. Approximately one hour after completing the charge, adjust the
electrolyte level to the upper electrolyte level mark.

Stored 1. After assembly, charge the battery for 15 hours at the rated
charging current I5 .
2. Discharge at the rated current to 1Vpc.
. Charge for 15 hours at the rated charging current.

 NI-CD-XLUCNT-CASE
2.0 Storage
Rooms where batteries are stored must be clean, dry, cool and well ventilated. The ambient
temperature should be 50ºF (10°C) to 86º (30°C) in compliance with IEC 60623. Do not store cells in
the packaging or expose to direct sunlight or UV-radiation.
The plastic transport seals on each cell must be firmly in place. Check the seals upon receipt and
annually thereafter. If a seal fails, carbon dioxide can enter the cell resulting in carbonation of the
plates and decreased capacity.

Empty Discharged Cells

To store cells and batteries for long periods of time without damage, make sure they are deeply
discharged, drained, well sealed, and kept in appropriate storage facilities.

Filled Charged/Discharged Cells

• Filled cells can be stored no longer than 12 months from the time of delivery.
• Filled cells stored at temperatures above 86ºF (30°C) will lose capacity. Capacity can be lost at
the rate of 5% for every 18º above 86ºF (10º above 30°C).
• If electrolyte has been lost during transport, refill the cell to the “MIN” mark with electrolyte before
attempting to store it. (see Section 5.0).

3.0 Charging
NOTE:
Keep cell caps closed during charging.

CAUTION!
The temperature of the electrolyte, when charging, should not exceed 113ºF (45°C).

NOTE:
Taking measurements before and after charging and during discharge will help track changes and identify
problems. To record accurate measurements, wait two hours after charging for the electrolyte to cool
sufficiently. Forms are provided in section 8.0 to record results.

3.1 Boost Charging

3.1.1 W-Characteristic Curve (DIN 41775)
The charging current and its progression are dependent on the time available for
charging. The duration of the charge is determined by the initial charging current and
also by the progression of the characteristic curve of the charger.

• Restrict the initial charging current to a maximum of 1.5 x I5. This will keep the
temperature of the electrolyte and the gas buildup within reasonable limits.

• End charging as soon as 140% (charging factor 1.4) of the current previously
taken out has been replaced.

• Manually or automatically, switch off the charging process at approximately

1.55Vpc.

NI-CD-XLUCNT-CASE
3.0 Charging, continued

3.1 Boost Charging, continued

3.1.2 IU-Characteristic Curve (DIN 41773 Part 2)

The charger must be suited to the special charging characteristics for NiCd batteries
and must switch off or over to float charging when the final charging voltage is
reached.

• The rising battery charging voltage is limited to a value of 1.55–1.65Vpc.

• When the charging voltage reaches 1.55–1.65Vpc, restrict the charging current
to a maximum of 1.5 x I5.

3.1.3 WU-Characteristic Curve

This process corresponds in principle to the IU characteristic curve.

3.1.4 I-Characteristic Curve (DIN 41776)

The voltage present at the end of the charge is influenced by the type of cell
construction and the temperature of the electrolyte.

• Charge the battery for 7 hours at a constant charging current of I5.

• Switch off the charge either by hand or automatically when the terminal
voltage at a constant charging current is no longer rising. Voltage should reach
approximately 1.65–1.75Vpc. Measurements should be taken every half hour.

• 140% (charging factor 1.4) of the current previously taken out should be replaced
by charging.

3.2 Charging Time

To calculate the charging time required to reach capacity use this formula:

1.4 x rated capacity [Ah]

t [h] =
mean charging current [A]

3.3 Equalizing Charge

An equalizing charge restores battery capacity and efficiency. Charge over 15 hours at I5 or
with the boost charging stage to suit the characteristic curve of the available charger.
Check the electrolyte level after an equalizing charge.

10 NI-CD-XLUCNT-CASE
3.0 Charging, continued

3.4 Maintaining Charge

3.4.1 Float Charge (Standby Parallel Mode)
Float charging compensates for the losses from the battery due to self discharge,
maintaining a fully charged state.

• The charging current should be approximately one mA/Ah at 68ºF (20°C), based
on the assumption that no current is being taken from the battery.

• The float charge voltage is 1.40–1.42Vpc.

3.4.2 Buffer Operation

Buffer operation compensates for both the losses from the battery due to self
discharge and for any short term discharges.

• The charging voltage is approximately 1.45–1.55Vpc.

• The reference temperature is 68ºF (20°C).

4.0 Discharging
Discharge current levels are limited only by the temperature of the electrolyte, providing there are no
other restrictions with respect to voltage drop.
Avoid deep discharges below 0.6Vpc. If necessary, carry out an equalizing charge as described in
section 3.3 after a deep discharge. See section 7.2 for discharge current and voltage specifications.

5.0 Electrolyte
WARNING!
Caustic potash solution is corrosive! If contact with skin or eyes occurs, flush area with
water for 10-15 minutes and consult a doctor.

5.1 Electrolyte Composition

The electrolyte in NiCd batteries consists of a dilute caustic potash solution (specific gravity
1.20kg/litre ± 0.01kg/litre) with a lithium hydroxide component, in accordance with DIN–IEC
993.
Prepare the caustic potash solution according to factory regulations. The specific gravity of
the electrolyte does not indicate the charge state; it changes insignificantly during charging
and discharging and is only minimally related to temperature.

5.2 Topping Up
To comply with DIN-IEC 993, use only purified or distilled water to top up the electrolyte level.
Refill with electrolyte only if spilled electrolyte has to be replaced. If, during refilling or topping
up, electrolyte is splashed onto the cell cover or between the cell cases make sure to clean
and dry the area.

NI-CD-XLUCNT-CASE 11
5.0 Electrolyte, continued

5.3 Filling/Replacing Electrolyte

Always fill cells using genuine electrolyte. The frequency of electrolyte replacement is largely
dependent on operating and ambient conditions.
Carbonate enrichment of the electrolyte (due to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) can result
in a capacity reduction. It is recommended the electrolyte be changed when a carbonate
content of 75g/litre is reached. The carbonate content of the electrolyte can be tested in the
factory laboratory using a minimum quantity of 0.2 litres of electrolyte.
When testing the carbonate content of electrolyte:
• Using the pump that comes in the accessory kit, collect a minimum quantity of 0.2 litres
of electrolyte in a clean glass or polyethylene container. Paying strict attention to the
applicable hazardous goods transportation regulations, send the container to the factory
lab.
• It is best to take the sample of electrolyte half an hour after charging has ended and from
several of the cells in a battery.

• Do not take samples immediately after topping up.

• The electrolyte sample and the cells should be closed and sealed immediately after the
electrolyte has been removed.

• If electrolyte is spilled, use sand to dry the area, then saturate with water. Check to make
sure the PH is less than or equal to 7 to ensure the KOH has been neutralized.

5.4 Electrolyte Temperatures

• Take temperature measurements on cells located at the center of the battery.
• If possible, maintain an electrolyte temperature of 95ºF (35°C) while charging. If this
temperature is exceeded, the charging current should be reduced or charging should be
temporarily stopped.
• The temperature of the electrolyte should never exceed 113º (45°C), as higher
temperatures have a detrimental effect on the functioning and life of the cells.
• Low ambient or electrolyte temperatures down to -13ºF (-25°C) have no lasting
detrimental effect on the battery, they simply cause a temporary reduction in capacity.

6.0 General Maintenance

• Always keep the battery, its container and installation equipment clean and dry.
• Check the nuts on the battery terminals at least every six months to ensure they are seated firmly.
• Clean cell caps regularly. Replace defective seals and cell caps.
• At regular intervals, smear all bright metal parts on the cells, such as battery terminals and cell
connectors, with diluted, acid-free petroleum jelly. This does not include the cell cases. Take care
that the diluted petroleum jelly is not applied to plastic parts of the battery. Do not use solvent
based cleaning agents.
• Do not use or store NiCd batteries in the same room as lead acid batteries. Take suitable
precautions, such as ventilation or hermetic isolation of the rooms, to keep the charging gases
from lead acid batteries away from NiCd batteries.
• Do not use tools for lead acid batteries with NiCd batteries.
