Cataloguing is the process of preparing catalogue entries. Cataloguing consist of two parts.

These are descriptive cataloguing and subject cataloguing. Cataloguing works with standards

such as RDA, Anglo- American cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, Library of Congress

Classification Schedules, LC Subject headings, Library of Congress catalogues.

Descriptive cataloguing provides bibliographic description using elements present in the


physical make-up of the document such as author, title, edition, name of publisher, date of
publication, place of publication, international standard book number (ISBN) etc. Description is
expected to be unique to that item only

Subject cataloguing is the part of the bibliographic records which provides the subject headings

of the document as well as the classification number. Subject cataloguing deals mainly with the

provision of subject heading through subject analysis document and assigning classification

codes (Aina, 2002). Subject cataloguing is an intellectual decision taken by the cataloguer of a

by analyzing the content of the document.
