Why is the Philippines

vulnerable to disaster?
Any phenomenon, substance or situation,
which has the potential to cause
disruption of damage to infrastructure
and services, people, their property &
their environment.

Can be:
- Natural (earthquakes, droughts)
- Human Induced (industrial accidents, armed
conflicts)
- Environmental (loss of biodiversity, ozone
depletion, deforestation)
The probability that negative
consequences may arise when
hazards interact with vulnerable
areas, people, property &
environment
A concept which describes factors or
constraints of an economic,
social, physical, or geographic nature, which
reduce the ability of a
community to prepare for and cope with the
impact of hazards.
The resources and skills people possess, can
develop, mobilize, and access which allow them
to have more control over shaping their own
future & coping with disaster risks.
The serious disruption of the functioning of society,
causing widespread human, material, or environmental
losses, which exceed the ability of the affected
communities to cope using their own resources
 Feeble shaking to violent trembling of the
ground produced by the sudden
displacement of rocks or rock materials
below the earth's surface.
 Giant sea waves generated by the under -
the-sea earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Signs:
-A felt earthquake
-Unusual sa level change: sudden sea water
retreat or rise
-Rumbling sound of approaching waves
 Active principle of burning, characterized by
the heat and light of combustion.
 Are rock,earth, or debris that flow on slopes
due to gravity.
 A sudden release of hot ash, molten rock and
gases from the volcano.
 A type of tropical cyclone, which is a general
term for a circulating weather system over
tropical waters.
