RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Design and Description

The multifunction pedal powered desk is shown in Plate 1. The machine is composed of

six main parts; the driven wheel, the dynamo, the battery, the inverter, the desk and the movable

chair. To come up into the specific output all of this must be out together.

The design was in accordance to the principles learned in various mechanical engineering

subjects mainly Machine Elements. The use of chain drive, belts and fastener.

The Driven Wheel? Or Pedal?

The multifunction pedal powered desk is being operated by the force of the user exerted

in the pedal. The amount of electricity produced or generated by pedaling is being tested, this is

to prove that the designed multifunction pedal powered desk produces a sufficient amount of

power to run the machine.

Dynamo? Alternator ?

The multifunction pedal powered desk uses dynamo

Battery

The battery are tested in two ways, for state of charge and for performance. The state of

charge is determined in the way that we determined the time for it to be fully charged while the

state of performance is determined based on the number of hours the battery can be used.

Construction Procedure

Before fabrication, the researchers made an extensive research and analysis of a design

needed to pursue the Multi-Function Pedal Powered Desk. Upon deciding which process this

machine would follow, the researchers started to choose which possible material could aid

different functions as mention above.

The assembly of the machine frame was made of rectangular tube with 2 inches by 1 inch

width, steel pipe with a diameter of 1 inch and angle bar with 1 inch width. These materials are

welded together to secure rigid connection between joints.

Testing

Our Multi-Function Pedal Powered Desk is tested through determination of its

characteristics namely; charging time Voltage rating and Storage battery capacity. The Charging

capacity is tested through the time it consumes to fully charge the battery. For its voltage rating, (

di ko alam). And for the storage battery capacity, it was tested in the way that we measured the
time consumed by the accessories on the desk until the battery run out of energy. Upon

completion of the prototype system, it was tested using a multimeter (?) to measure the voltage

produced and the speed at which the generator is producing that voltage respectively. It was

found to produce a voltage of (ilang volts) V and (current) A at a speed of rpm generator speed.

Machine Modifications

Data and Results

From the computation and analysis carried out, it is observed that the speed of the wheel

and generator pulley have a linear relationship. Varying the size of either of the pedal input

sprocket or the wheel that is connected to the generator will have an effect on the amount of

voltage produced and also the amount of work done on the system. Thus increasing either of

them will result to an increase in the speed of the generator and thus increase in the voltage

produced.

The speed (rpm) required to reach any particular voltage is determined by the load - the

lighter the load, the lower the rpm needed to reach the specified voltage. The generator will

generate electric current based on load. This means that if a battery is fully discharged, it will

accept a great deal of power to charge it, but as it approaches a full charge, the amount of

electricity accepted will be very little. In terms of the generator, it will be more difficult to turn

when the battery is discharged and very easy to turn when it is full.

The steps of the experiment were:

- The bike's pedals are rotated with the highest speed possible (for a biker); theoretically

we have a value of speed N close to the maximum;

- We increase the load and repeat the above steps.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

This research was focused on the development, fabrication and evaluation of the Multi-

function Pedal Powered Desk as an alternative source of energy. Specifically, it sought to

develop, to fabricate, to construct, to test, and to evaluate the Multi-function Pedal Powered Desk

in conformity to the Technology Assessment Protocol (TAP) using technical feasibility,

economic/financial viability, environmental soundness, potential acceptability, and social

acceptability.

The researchers used the project-development type of research and descriptive evaluative

design. A questionnaire was the main tool to evaluate the machine.

The signings show that the design and development of the Multi-function Pedal Powered

Desk was made in accordance to its description and specifications. ( di pa matuloy kase wala

Conclusion

In conclusion, this project study was designed to serve as a model or prototype to meet

the specific need in our locality. This device can also serve as an alternative power source

whenever there will be an extreme scenario that will happen not only in rural areas but also in

urban areas. Since this device is manually operated thus it can be used in any areas where there is

no power supple and would always be readily available.

This device is also an environment friendly as it produces no waste in the process of its

operation and thus work with little or no noise. Our Multi-function Pedal Powered Desk proved

efficient since even with a minimum pedaling speed, the system produces enough voltage

required to charge the battery in order for the system to be usable by almost anybody at any time.

Not only an environment friendly device but also our Multi-function Pedal Powered Desk can

provide a useful way of physical exercise.

Recommendations

We highly recommend our Multi-function Pedal Powered Desk as an effective alternative

power generating machine which can be used if electricity in our houses run out of time.

Suggested design improvement for future reproduction will be highly accepted for we know that

it will benefit for the betterment of the machine.
