Abstract
• The goal of the Electric tricycle rickshaw project is to make less man power
mobility for the users.
• The aim of this project is to add an electric power train and control system to the
current pedaling tricycle to provide tricycle users with improved levels of
mobility, facilitating contribution to the community.
• E-rickshaw is slowly becoming popular in some cities in India. “Petrol and Diesel
are past. E-rickshaw is the future” Thus observing the shift towards technology
with more efficiency and being eco-friendly that is the “e-technology” and with
taking a relook on past, going with present socio-economic impact of e-rickshaw
and giving a thought for future study of this paper is done in different manner.
Existing methodology
• Presently, pedalling tricycle rickshaws are used by many of the
people in the community, but some current users of the pedalling
tricycle rickshaws do not have the physical strength or coordination
to propel themselves on the tricycle with their legs, arms and hands.
Pedaling tricycle rickshaw
Proposed methodology
• The aim of this project is to add an electric power train and control
system to the current pedaling tricycle to provide tricycle users with
improved levels of mobility, facilitating contribution to the
community.
• This provides ease of work for the users .
Construction of e-powered tricycle
• E-rikshaw came in number of models. These rikshaws have a MS tubular chasis
system uses 48 V which is used in India. Fiber provides strength and durability
which results in less maintenance so they are also becoming popular in e-rikshaw
manufacturing.
Design process
• The design objectives required a simple and affordable design for the power
train and controls, a design that needed to be reliable, sustainable, and
functional.
• The design consists of an electric motor, a drive system, motor and steering
controls, and a power supply.
• The design of body varies form load carriers, passenger's vehicle with no roof, to
full body along with windshield for driver comfort.
• The first aspect of our design that was addressed was the drive system or means
of power transmission. Power must be transmitted from the electric motor to a
rear wheel of the tricycle.
• Second, a method of motor control was decided on. The controls for motor speed
and braking.

List of Components
ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS
1.Drive systems
• Fully electric powered (FE) with all power coming from the motor:
This method requires no physically human effort, except speed
control, using a throttle.
• Pedal assisted power (PA) is where the motor and drive both work
together and share the burden of the work.
2.Battery
• We used 4 batteries in this project . Each of them has 12 amps and 48 volt .
• Each battery is branded.
3.Motor
• The motor is the most important component. Based on the motor only we can
decide how much the vehicle can withstand load, and the pulling force, etc., In
this project we use BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR with a capacity of 12V and 30
amps. In BLDC motor the current carrying conductor is stationary and the
permanent magnet is moving.
4.Controller
• It is main component that connects the batteries with the DC motor. It is
responsible for controlling the acceleration of the vehicle.
• Controller is the brain of e-rikshaw it performs following functions.
• Battery low voltage & Over voltage protection.
• Over Heat protection.
• Robust cabinet with better cooling system.
• Electronic braking protection.
• Throttle Error protection.
• Anti-theft protection.
• Regenerative Braking.
• Speed limiting.
• MECHANICAL COMPONENTS
1. Front shock absorbers:
• These are pump like devices which keep your vehicles tyres in contact with the
road surface by controlling the rebound of its suspension springs. As long as your
vehicles tyres remain in contact with the road, steering, road handling and braking
response will be optimal helping to keep you safe. Helical Spring with dampener
with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers are used.
2. Brakes
Drum brake:
• A Drum brake is a brake that uses friction caused by a set of shoes or pads that
press outward against a rotating cylinder-shaped part called a brake drum. The
term drum brake usually means a brake in which shoes press on the inner
surface of the drum. We use this brake system in front wheel.
Disc brake:
• A disc brake is a type of brake that uses the calipers to squeeze pairs of pads
against a disc or a “rotor” to create friction. This action slows the rotation of a
shaft, such as a vehicle axle, either to reduce its rotational speed to hold it
stationary. This brake system is used in back wheel
3. Steering systems
• Handle bar type steering system is used, because it is a rickshaw so by using this
type of steering system it is very easy to control the vehicle.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Research was done online as well as in magazine articles in search of presently available solutions to
our problem.
• We found many products that were available for purchase, but they didn’t entirely meet the
• The problem has been solved, and in many different ways, but what we found, or rather didn’t find,
was a solution to our problem that meets our specific needs of affordability and appropriateness.
• The advantage of finding these solutions is that we can see what works, what has been tried, and
• Then we can more effectively consider how to design a similar product that meets our unique needs.
conclusion
• Using the pedaling tricycle as the basis for our design made the Electric Tricycle
more of an appropriate technology because it uses a familiar, locally available
platform as a starting point.
