PCE COILED TUBING FLOW ACTIVATED

DOUBLE ENDED SHIFTING TOOL

INTRODUCTION

The PCE Coiled Tubing Double Ended Selective Shifting Tool (DESST) has been
designed specifically to selectively shift PCE, Otis, Camco, Baker sliding sleeves (SSD’s)
in horizontal well bores.

The DESST shifting keys are normally retracted during the running operation and are
hydraulically flow activated to the open shift position by increasing surface pump volume
and therefore pressure at the downhole location of the DESST and SSD. The DESST can
selectively open or close multiple SSD’s in a single CT trip.

OPERATION

The DESST is assembled as standard with an 1/8” ID orifice across which the design flow
activated pressure differential is created (see specific PCE Product Data Sheet for
hydraulic operating pressure required for any given DESST). The DESST should always
be operated on surface prior to running into the well bore and it is recommended it be run
in conjunction with a PCE Sequencing Tool.

The DESST is run into the well bore to the depth of the SSD to be shifted. Prior to arriving
at the SSD pump volume pressure at surface is increased in order to activate the DESST
keys to the open down shift position. If the SSD to be shifted is a DOWNSHIFT SSD then
simply move down the well bore until the DESST sits up and weight is lost. Further
downward push or jarring will open or close the SSD, depending upon make & design the
DESST will fall through the SSD. During this operation the up-shift keys on the DESST will
be activated but will not have any material effect on the downshift operation.
If the surface pump is shut down at this point in time the DESST shifting keys will be de-
activated and the DESST can be retrieved from the well bore without effecting the status of
any SSD’s through which it passes. If however the SSD that was previously down-shifted
needs to be up-shifted, the surface pump volume and pressure can once again be
increased and the DESST activated. Upward movement of the Coiled Tubing will now
cause the activated DESST UPSHIFT keys to locate within the SSD, and the SSD can be
shifted by upward tension on the Coiled Tubing or by upward jar action. When the DESST
pulls through the SSD without obstruction the SSD can be assumed to be shifted.
If the surface pump is once again shut down the DESST shifting keys will again be
de-activated and the DESST can be retrieved without effecting the status of any SSD
through which it passes. It is therefore possible to open and close any number of SSD’s as
often as required in one single run into the well bore with Coiled Tubing.

MAINTENANCE

Ensure all parts, threads and seals are clean and lightly oiled or greased. After every run
the tool should be completely stripped, cleaned and all seals, back ups and shear screws
should be replaced. During inspection all damaged or worn parts should be replaced.
Particular attention should be paid to all piston areas, sealing surfaces, Choke Inserts and
Shear Pins.

Disassembly Procedure

1. Remove Hex soc set screw (18) from Connector Sub (16) and break connection
between Mandrel (1), Bottom Sub (2) and Connector Sub (16) and separate.
-WARNING :- The Connector Sub is under compressive load and extreme care and
caution should be taken during disassembly.

Repeat the following for both the Mandrel / Top Sub (1) and Mandrel / Bottom Sub (2).

2. Remove the Spring Spacer (21) and Coil Spring (15).

3. Invert the Mandrel so the Connector Sub thread connection is lowermost and give a
sharp tap on a suitable surface (wood).

4. The Piston (13), Piston Sleeve (10) and Spring Housing (8) will fall free of the Mandrel.

5. The Piston Sleeve (10) and Spring Housing (8) can now be unscrewed from each
other.

6. Remove Shear screws (9) from Collet sleeve (7) and the Collet sleeve will be free to be
removed from the Mandrel (1).

7. Invert the Collet Sleeve with Shifting Keys so that the collet is lowermost and give a
sharp tap on a suitable surface (wood), the Keys (4) and Key retainers (3, 6) will now
be free to separate from the Collet sleeve.

Clean and inspect all components, worn or damaged components should be replaced to
maintain the best performance of the tool.

ASSEMBLY

1. Load all ‘O’ rings and backups as per product data sheet and assembly drawing.

Make up 2 off Sub Assemblies ‘A’: -

2 Locate legs of key spring (5) into the holes in the back of the keys (4)

3 With the collet legs of the collet sleeve (7) facing upwards. Push lower key retainer (6)
over collet sleeve (7) with the castellations facing upwards.

4 Placing the flat side of the upper key retainer (3) on the bench push the collet legs of
the collet sleeve (7) into the centre hole of the upper key retainer (3).

NOTE
Do not engage upper key retainer (3) fully.

5 Locate keys (4) with the sharper angle facing down into lower key retainer (6) with the
flat face of the keys (4) meeting on the sides of the lower key retainer (6) which are
flatted.

6 Holding keys (4) together gently tap upper key retainer (3) down over collet legs (7) so
as the gap between the keys (4) is in line and central with the flatted part of both the
upper and lower key retainer (3,4).

NOTE
If the key sub assembly is correctly assembled the keys should return, under spring
pressure, to the open position if nipped together with fingers.

Sub Assembly ‘B’

Some Tool sizes have a tapped port in the Mandrel (1) adjacent to the Collet sleeve slots,
this is to allow circulation behind the Keys (4). A 1/16 NPT Plug will close this port.

Repeat the following for both the Mandrel / Top Sub (1) and Mandrel / Bottom Sub (2).

1 Stand Mandrel on a bench with box thread down. Slide Sub assembly ‘A’ over each
Mandrel, with the angle on the bottom of the keys facing upwards, until the tapped
holes in the shoulder of the Collet (7) line up with the (shear) groove in the Mandrel .

2 Make up brass or steel Shear Screws (9) as required for safety shear feature (see
product data for approximate shear ratings).

3 Make up the Piston Sleeve (10) to Spring Retainer (8).

4 Load Piston (13) onto Mandrel until it stops against the shoulder on the Mandrel.
(Smaller sizes of this tool the Piston is threaded to the Mandrel as there is no shoulder
on the Mandrel).

5 Slide Piston Sleeve (assembly) (10 & 8) over the Mandrel and Piston (13). The
internally chamfered end of the Piston Sleeve (10) should cover the Shear Screws in
the Collet (7).

6 Tap the Piston Sleeve (assembly) (10 & 8 ) down as far as it will go. (When fully down
this should nip keys (4) in together ) Place one Coil Spring (15) over one Mandrel so as
it is now sat on the back of the Spring Retainer (8).

7 Locate Spring Spacer (21) on end of Coil Spring (15).

8 Take the Connector Sub (16) and compressing the Coil Spring (15) through the Spring
Spacer (21) make up to one of the Mandrels by a couple of threads
-WARNING :- The Connector Sub is now under compressive load and extreme care and
caution should be taken until fully made up.

9 Place the second Spring Spacer (21) and Coil Spring (15) onto the Connector Sub
(16).

10 Taking the other Mandrel assembly make up to the Connector Sub (16) holding the
Connector Sub (16) still, compressing the Coil Spring (15) and turning the Mandrel
assembly.

11 Make both Mandrel assemblies tight to the Connector Sub (16).

12 Make up Grub Screws (18) into the tapped holes in the Connector Sub (16).

13 Insert choke insert (19) into lowermost end of the tool, if required.
