BJ HURRICANE VALVE

DESCRIPTION
The BJ Hurricane Valve is a mechanically operated well servicing
tool designed for well containment related to the modification,
repair and/or removal of the well head and also for temporary well
abandonment due to rough weather conditions.
Placed above a mechanical set retrievable packer, the BJ Hurricane
Valve is run with sufficient string weight below the packer to
provide a positive “pack off”.
After the packer has been set, the running/retrieving tool is rotated
off the BJ Hurricane Valve leaving the built in valve in the closed
position.

FEATURES
• Running/retrieving tool is incorporated in BJ Hurricane Valve.
• Right hand running/retrieving ACME or STUB ACME
threads.
• A built-in spring activated, pressure maintained seal valve.
• Interior valve is open when running/retrieving tool is made up
to the Upper Body, allowing tubing to fill.
• Standard IF drill pipe connections.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The well needs to be as clean as possible to guarantee a successful
job. If possible, perform a scrape run to at least 5 to 10 ft. below
the packer setting depth and circulate the well clean.
Make up the BJ Hurricane Valve on the top of the packer (right
hand set packer only). Do not put power tongs on the Extension
Guide on the running-retrieving tool.
Run the packer to the appropriate depth; do not turn string to left
while running in hole. Set the packer with the entire weight of the
string below the packer only.

Hold the entire weight of the string above the packer (to get neutral point at Hurricane Valve), and slowly rotate
the string to the left. The maximum torque allowed is 4500 ft-lbs. Any torque above this limit can cause the
Hurricane Valve to part between the Upper and Lower Body or between the Lower Body and the Bottom Sub.
To avoid building up torque, slowly pick up the string approx. 5 inches during the left-hand rotation.
The left-hand rotation releases the running tool from the valve and closes the valve. It takes (11-12) turns to the
left at the tool to release the 3 ½” valve and (9-10) turns to the left at the tool to release the 4 ½” valve. Pull the
running tool out of hole. Before pull out of hole it is recommended to spot a high viscosity pill above the valve
to protect the threads.
To retrieve the packer and valve from the well, run the running-retrieving tool to the depth of the valve. Do not
run hard into the valve. Set down just enough weight to be sure that the running-retrieving tool has reached the
valve. Rotate one turn gently to the left using a chain-tong to align the starting ACME or STUB ACME threads.
Rotate the string slowly to the right and stop as soon as a positive torque is obtained (the maximum torque at the
tool shall not exceed 1400 ft-lbs.). It takes (11-12) turns to the right at the tool to engage the 3 ½” valve and (9-
10) turns to the right at the tool to engage the 4 ½” valve. Slowly lower the pipe approximate 5 inches during the
engagement.
The valve is now open and the packer can be retrieved from the well.
Close annular preventer or pipe rams and apply 200 psi of annular pressure to ensure that the hold down buttons
are retracted. Pick up approximately one foot to unset the packer and allow 5 minutes for the packing elements
to relax before pulling the packer out of hole.

MATERIALS
All load-bearing components are made of P110 equivalent steel.
All standard elastomers are nitrile.

Testing Instructions
WARNING – All pressure tests shall be performed in a safe manner using blast panels in an
enclosed area . The test area shall be cleared of personnel during testing.

1. Clean and lubricate bull plug threads and sealing surfaces.

2. Place assembly in vise.
3. Fill the assembly with water while securing vertically.
4. Install bull plugs to box & pin ends of assembly. (Part number 85866-1, 85808-1, or part number 86012-1,
86013-1 will be made up to the upper body in place of the top sub – see page 11)
5. Attach gage assembly to upper bull plug.
6. Pressure to 500 psi and bleed several times to ensure removal of air from the test volume
7. Pressure test :
If a Union fitting bullplug is used (2”-1502 connection) pressure to 80% of assembly pressure rating.
If a bullplug with NPT fitting is used, DO NOT EXCEED 4000 PSI TEST PRESSURE.
8. Allow to stabilize for 5 minutes. Assembly should then hold pressure for 10 minutes with no visible leaks.
9. Bleed pressure slowly back to 0 psi.
10. Record pressure test.
11. Resume Final Assembly
