Two General Divisions of Literature


PROSE POETRY

Sub-Divisions:
1. PROSE is a form of literature that does not follow any rhyme. It can be categorized into
FICTION and NON-FICTION.
1.1. FICTION is narration which is created from the imagination. Examples are: SHORT
STORY. NOVEL, PARABLE, FABLE, MYTH, LEGEND
1.2. NON-FICTION is an account of a subject which is represented as fact. Examples
are: ESSAY, LETTERS, JOURNAL, BIOGRAPHY, & AUTOBIOGRAPHY
2. POETRY is an artistic expression of human feelings and emotions in rhythmic language.
It has two sub-classifications: NARRATIVE POETRY and LYRIC POETRY.
2.1 NARRATIVE POETRY tells a story, recounts an event, or narrates an interesting incident. It has all the
elements of a short story. Examples are: EPIC, BALLAD, METRICAL TALE, & ROMANCE
2.2 LYRIC POETRY expresses the personal emotional experience of a poet, which might be real or imagined.
Examples are: SONNET, ODE, ELEGY, SONG, PSALM & HYMN
2.3 DRAMATIC POETRY has elements related to drama because it is written in dramatic form or makes use
of a dramatic techniques.
