Course Syllabus

Course code: GE 6 Course Title: Science, Technology and Society


Credit Units: 3 Time Duration: 2hrs/week
Program Placement: 1st Semester
Pre-requisite: NONE

Description The course deals with the interactions between science and technology and social, cultural, political,
and economic contexts that shape and are shaped by them.
This interdisciplinary course engages students to confront the realities brought about by science and
technology in society. Such realities pervade the personal, the public, and the global aspects of our
living and are integral to human development. Scientific knowledge and technological development
happen in the context of society with all its socio-political, cultural, economic, and philosophical
underpinnings at play. This course seeks to instil reflective knowledge in the students that they are
able to live the good life and display ethical decision making in the face of scientific and technological
advancement.
Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
Knowledge
1. Articulate the impacts of science and technology on society, specifically Philippine society.
2. Explain how science and technology affect society and the environment and its role in nation-
building.
3. Analyse the human condition in order to deeply reflect and express philosophical ramifications that
are meaningful to the student as a part of society
4. Define and demonstrate the impact of social media on the student’s life and Philippine society in
general.

1. Imbibe the importance of science and technology in the preservation of the environment and the
development of the Filipino nation
2. Critique human flourishing vis-a-vis the progress of science and technology such that the student
may be able to define for himself/herself the meaning of a good life.
3. Foster the value of a healthy lifestyle toward the holistic and sustainable development of society and
the environment.

Competency Standards/Program At the end of this program, the students should be able to;

creative solutions to contemporary issues guided by ethical standards; and
4. Foster the value of healthy lifestyle and appreciate the importance of the course as one becomes a
responsible member of the society.
Classroom Policies Attendance, assignments and submission policies:
Students are required to have their own blue-long envelope in order to keep their activities and quizzes
in one place. The blue-long envelope serves as their final output by the end of the term.
Attendance are being monitored every meeting. Stamps (with my name and date for today) are being
attached to the students’ activities and projects to maintain order and honesty. Assignments and
submission are to be on time as announced as scheduled in the class sessions. Absentees should
provide valid reason. In Midterm and Final exam, students are expected to have their examination
permit before taking the exam. In case of emergency on exam days, the student should contact the
teacher ahead of time, without valid excuse means no comply of grades as being agreed by all during
the first meeting.

Academic Dishonesty:
All forms of dishonesty as indicated as deals class rules in the higher education is automatically
equivalent to a failing grade or academic exercise. Plagiarism is automatic “Failed” in an output.

Gender and Development:


All oral and written communication output/class interactions are required to obseerve the use of
gender sensitive language,

Harrasment and discrimination:


This course prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race,ethnicity, sex, pregnancy,color,
religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender
identity, and genetic information.

Religious accommodation
Everybody is required to refrain conflicts with students’ religious practices and/or observances.
Grading system Written (Quizzes) =25%
Performance task (reporting, participation etc) = 35%
Major exams (Midterm/Finals) = 40%
