Reflective Title
Exploring the Concepts of "Learning by Doing" during the Senior High School Immersion Program: A G
Description:
 what happened?
We are constantly learning every single day, even when we’re doing simple tasks like
going for a walk or having a conversation with somebody. We spend a lot of our time
simply learning through observation, as well as being taught in schools.
This Title involves the Senior High School students, teachers and administration of
the Institution. Senior High School students have to undergo Work Immersion meaning
the students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn things
related to the track. As a part of the institution, we need to ensure that the students gain
various competencies that would have these future professionals ready for
employment.

Feelings: what were you thinking and feeling?

The study will be conducted in Secondary Schools in Talugtug District, Nueva Ecija. I
want to study this because i want the students in Talugtug are all well prepared in their
working environment. I don't want to feel ashamed if the students go to their deployment
area having lack of knowledge and skills.

Evaluation: what was good and bad about the experience?
The good thing for the for some students they are going great when they are
assigned to the right area, unfortunately there are students assigned just to observe but
don't let the students feel to hands-on.
In the Philippines, youth unemployment hampers meaningful economic
development. The sector’s lack of knowledge, skills, and work experience puts them at
a disadvantage. One way to address this is through the Department of Education’s
Senior High School (SHS) program, ushered by the K-12 education reform. One of its
components, the work immersion program, provides students “real workplace”
experience, giving students a set of technical-vocational and livelihood skills that can
help them make more informed career choices and improve their employment
prospects. “Properly implemented, work immersion improves student competencies,
helps them make informed career choices, and creates employment opportunities
straight out of Senior High.(CfC Reform-Story No. 8.(March 2018) retrieved from
https://asiafoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/). The Work Immersion
Program is one of the course requirements for SHS graduation. A
SHS student has to undergo work immersion in a business organization or
establishment with work requirements. Work immersion provide insights into the
students' perceptions of a college experiences (Harkness, 2017). And it gain
experience in interdisciplinary collaboration (Sterling 2017) As a result, student felt well
prepared for internship with some indication that the self-directed nature of the final
year promote a lifelong learning approach ( Sen, Gupta 2018).

Analysis: what sense can you make of the situation?

What could lead to confusion is that the word “immersion” actually has two
meanings in K to 12. The first meaning refers to a required SHS subject in the
curriculum. The second meaning refers not to a subject but to a preferred mode of
delivery of Tech-Voc subjects.
Work immersion helps the trainees to learn more about their chosen field and
practice what they have learned from school. It helps in building up of the trainees’
competence that will develop the one’s professionalism in dealing with people. After the
training, the trainee will be able to handle situation properly and do things successfully.
In addition, it also helps to enhance the skills of the trainees. Work immersion is one of
the best training methods because it is planned, organized and conducted in the
employee’s worksite and students will increase their productivity and develop their
skills.

Conclusion: what else could you have done?
Senior High School is compliant with the requirements for the Immersion Program,
however, there are provisions that need to be addressed. The strengths of the
implementation are: Curriculum Guide; Students’ orientation; parental consent and
insurance; and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) are notarized. The major weak
points are: desired competencies to be evaluated; budget and materials for the
Immersion and lack of information on process and required forms. The partner Industry
input should be taken into considerations: increasing the 80 Hours time for Academic
Strand Immersion; Required Prior skills should be taught in the school; The Expected
Learned Competencies should be clear and specified. As to Tracer Profile, majority of
the students are taking courses which are aligned to their chosen strands. The SHS is
effective and successful in its constant prodding and guidance to make students be
prepared in College.

Action plan: if the situation arose again, what would you do?
For students, they must be ready of the problems that they will be encounter during
their work immersion. For teachers, they need to conduct orientation and screening
before they deploy their students to their assigned work place.
