Title of Activities: Pick – A Sentence Box

One Day, One Page

Wonder Words

Adopt A Classmate

Objectives:

1. Enrich learner’s Vocabulary bank.


2. Enhance learners’ grammatical skills.
3. Improve learners’ reading comprehension.

Rationale:

Based on the Phil- IRI result conducted on July 2017, 158 students are under
Frustration level of reading. The school aims to alleviate this number and help students
improve their capacity in reading. To do so, the teachers came up with activities entitled
Pick – A Sentence Box, One Day, One Page, Wonder Words and Adopt A Classmate. These
activities are designed to attend the learner’s need in comprehending a text and eventually
improve their reading proficiency.

Activity Background:

Pick –A Sentence Box

A box - full of sentences is prepared. Students concerned are going to pick one each
day and read. At the back of each sentence is a corresponding grammatical question. This
aims to help students refresh and enhance their grammatical skills.

One Day One Page

Students concerned are going to spend 5 minutes each day to read a one page text
prepared by the teacher. For higher grades (9 and 10) Adopt A Classmate is much
preferred – this applies a buddy system in which one adopts a classmate to help facilitate
the reading. Follow up questions are to be given during the reading.
Wonder Words

Students are tasked to pick one from the Wonder Words Box in their class.
Definitions and sample sentence use are provided. After which, students are to create their
own sentence using the word they’ve picked.

Target Learners : Students with Frustration Reading Ability

Time Frame : December 2017- March 2017

Facilitators : English Subject Teachers

Frequency of the Conduct: Daily

Mode of Assessment: Reading Comprehension Test (3 times a month)
