1 Introduction

Kantipur Engineering College (KEC), Dhapakhel, Lalitpur is one of the leading private
engineering colleges in Nepal. The college was established in 1998 with the basic objective of
creating an excellent platform for the engineering studies in Nepal. With around 100 teachers
and staffs, KEC is currently conducting Bachelors of Engineering (BE) programs in Civil (96
Seats), Computer (96 Seats) and Electronics, Communication & Information Engineering (96
Seats) under the guidelines of the Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University.

Vision: The vision of Kantipur Engineering College (KEC) is to develop the college as a center
of excellence for engineering education in Nepal and South-East Asia.

Mission: Kantipur Engineering College attempts to serve the people of Nepal in order to enhance
the infrastructure development of the country by imparting quality engineering education,
carrying applied research and producing competent engineering manpower.

Objectives:
KEC has been established with the primary objectives to:
 Produce proficient, qualified and socially responsible engineering manpower required to
face the challenges of the country in the new millennium.
 Develop the college as a research and resource center so as to initiate research activities
to strengthen engineering potentialities and to solve problems related to the areas of
engineering in the country.
 Provide opportunities to the citizens of Nepal willing to get engineering education in
different fields at affordable cost.
 Launch different programs to integrate educational and developmental activities.
 Serve as a sustained center for imparting engineering education so as to update and
upgrade the existing engineering manpower.

In order to achieve its objectives, mission and vision, KEC employs more than 50 skilled
faculties in several disciplines and more than 50% of these faculties are lecturers. Hierarchy
wise, the post of lecturers are considered to be as 7th level post. In response to the outflow of
faculties from KEC, it announces the vacancy for the post of lecturer as per the requirement.

2 Job Analysis
Job Analysis is one of the crucial parts in Recruitment and Selection process in which all the
information related to particular job are gathered and analyzed. It includes content, context and
the human requirement for the job. Here, we will be performing job analysis of following Job:
Job Title: Lecturer
Department: Department of Computer and Electronics Engineering
Position: Full-Time
Report to: Head of the Department (HoD)
One of the primary goals of KEC is to provide quality education to its students and the Lecturers
are the front line employees who directly deal with the students. Lecturers act as a bridge
between college management and the students. In order to be qualified to teach a bachelors level
students, one should be have completed at-least masters’ level in related field. Also, as the
engineering courses are designed to be in English medium, Lecturer shall be required to have
proficiency in verbal and written English. The teaching-learning process is carried out mainly
through class lectures and so a lecturer must be well prepared before conduction any lecture
classes and should have a good presentation skill as well. Along with lectures, students needs to
be encourages in enhancing their learning through tutorials and assignments. So, preparing and
maintaining the standard of tutorials to be provided to students is the responsibility of a lecturer.
Making a group students understand the subject matter of bachelors’ level courses is a big
challenge and at-least one year of teaching experience shall be required for that.
All students are not same and so they need to be evaluated on the basis of their performance.
Examination is one of the basis of evaluation and Lecturers will be required to assist the exam
section in conducting two examinations in an semester. As the department needs to keep track of
the performance of students, it shall be the responsibility of lecturer to provide students’
evaluation reports to the department. No person is perfect, so Lecturer should always try to
enhance their capacity through discussions, trainings and conferences. Acting as the bridge
between college administration and students, lecturers knows more about student psychology and
behavior. So, lecturers can help college management/department by providing such information
which could be crucial in conducting managerial/departmental/managerial activities.

Job Overview: The job of Lecturer is basically to transfer knowledge to students. How
clearly students have understood and performed in examination will reflect his/her success.
For students, lecturer is the face of college and acts as the bridge between students and
management. Their performance is one of the main factors considered in evaluation of the
overall performance of college.
Responsibilities and Duties:
 Lecture Planning and Preparation: Produce schemes of work, lesson plans, assessment
plans, learning materials and any other related activities that impact on the effectiveness
of teaching and learning

4 Vacancy Notice

Vacancy Notice is a tool to attract potential candidates towards the job. It helps in the
recruitment process by expanding the pool of candidates for the post. The vacancy notice shall
include information that potential candidates need to know before applying for the job. It cannot
have any false information and major information that would attract potential and qualified

5 Identification and Design of Selection Tools

After the vacancy notice, the applicants who fulfill required criteria shall be called for interview.
Evaluation of candidates shall also be done from the demonstration class given by the shortlisted
candidates from interview. Final selection of candidates shall be done on the basis of their
performance in interview and demonstration class. So, basically, two tools- Interview and
Demonstration Class, shall be used for the selection of lecturer.

i. Interview
This tool shall be used to evaluate the knowledge of the candidate in the subject as
well as to assess their attitude toward job and college. Expert in particular subject
area shall be called from Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus as one of the
member of interview panel. Other interview panel members shall be Principal, Vice
Principal, Head of Department (HoD) and Deputy HoD.

Any candidate below threshold level in the evaluation shall be immediately rejected.
Other candidates shall be shortlisted on the basis of their performance in interview.
The interview marks of the candidates shall be kept confidential among the interview
panel.

ii. Demonstration Class


Basically, this tool shall be used to evaluate the presentation and communication skill
of the candidate. This tool is helpful to evaluate the aspects like how the candidate
handles the class, deliver the knowledge, answer the queries, manages the time etc.
For the demonstration class, candidates are required to deliver a lecture in particular
pre-assigned topic. The audiences in the demonstration class shall be Principal, Vice
Principal, HoD, Deputy HoD and other teachers from the department. Feedback is
collected from everyone present in the class and evaluation is done on the basis of
this feedback.

The evaluation marks from interview and the demonstration class shall be added and candidate
with highest point is referred for selection by HoD to the Principal. If no other issues found, the
referred candidate shall be appointed as a full-time lecturer of KEC by the Principal.

6 Socialization Programme
The newly appointed Lecturers shall be oriented soon after the appointment date. The orientation
and socialization program is important to acquaint newly appointed Lecturers about the college
and to make them comfortable in new working environment for them. Following modality shall
be implemented for orientation / Socialization Programme.

i. Students’ Feedback
Before the end of every semester, feedbacks from students are collected for each teacher. The
feedback shall be used for teacher’s evaluation and performance improvement. The feedback
report shall be kept confidential with the department. The aggregated report shall be disclosed
only to respective teacher after the teacher submits students’ marks and evaluation report to the
department. Following form shall be used to collect students’ feedback.

Every teacher shall submit their semester report to the department. This report is a self appraisal
of the teachers which is referred by the department for teachers’ valuation. This report includes
the involvement of particular teacher in different activities during the semester and also the board

8 Conclusion

Katipur Engineering College has a long history in engineering education sector. Lecturers are the
important human resource for any educational institution. The college should be very careful in
recruitment and selection of Lecturers so as to appoint the best candidate. Recruitment process
should be efficient so that strong potential candidate do not miss out and the selection process
must be fair and with no biasness. The above mentioned processes for recruitment and selection
are standard and widely accepted in several organizations.

The orientation and socialization programme is very important to acquaint the newly appointed
Lecturers about the rules, regulations and policies of the organization. Also, socialization
programme helps new Lecturers know their colleagues and to be comfortable in their new
working environment. The designed orientation / socialization model shall be effective in
achieving these outcomes and fit the new lecturer in college environment.

It is very important to fairly evaluate the employees and reward/promote them on the basis of
their evaluation. The evaluation of the Lecturer is mainly related to how satisfied the students are
from his/her teaching and how well then understand the subject matter. Department shall analyze
every aspects so as to effectively evaluate its lecturers. Any biasness in evaluation shall lead to
dissatisfaction and demonization for the Lecturers and it will directly affect their performance.

Any mistakes, misunderstanding or miscommunication may directly affect the performance of


Lecturer and so the performance of entire college. Hence, Kantipur Engineering College shall be
very careful regarding recruitment, selection, orientation, socialization and appraisal of its most
important human resource- the lecturers.
