Immediately after jointing and grouting concreting the client will check that the

drainage holes are open as well as drill if needed additional drainage holes because
of blocking of core by grouting concrete. The client blocks drainage holes just before
the finishing work of the slab soffits. Drainage holes of hollow core slabs are not
blocked in spaces, which are in the open air.

10. MAKING HOLES AND NOTCHES

At the site the holes at the point of cores are made according to the instructions of
the structural designed. The maximum number of the holes is three (3) pieces in any
one cross-section, except for VARIAX 4 only two (2) pieces. The holes for the soffits
of the slabs are all made on the site.

In case that the holes for embedded parts on the edge of hollow core slabs are made
at the site, it has to be taken into account that making a hole may not damage the
slab and the strands cannot be visible.

The hole is made with easiest way as follows

1. hack a hole from above

2. hack the outermost edge in
3. chip at the hole outwards to form the rectangular shape

11. OPENINGS

Holes in hollow core floors are made as indicated in the figure. The dimensions are
limited to the values given in the table. Opening in hollow core slab for joint
connections or M&E installation should be made in fresh concrete during the
production process. Openings are made at the site shall by hacking or diamond-
tipped coring drill under the Engineer’s supervision. After fixing installation (or
reinforcement) all openings and recesses shall be filled with concrete quality C 30.
Longitudinal voids affected by the openings shall be sealed with tight fit synthetic
caps.

Larger voids that are wider than the width of the precast units are trimmed using
transverse support such as steel angle or concrete beams. Eastern Pretech can
supply the steel angles on request.
