Tutorial #2
Date : July 25, 2019, 10 am Deadline : July 27, 2019, 6 pm

1. Consider a hypothetical hull girder from Tutorial#1. Consider 𝐸 = 210 GPa. Consider the metal
thickness as 20 mm. Calculate the Second moment of inertia about the horizontal neutral axis
(NA) for midship section (Fig.1) without any internal members. Locate the NA w.r.t. the keel.
Which is closer to the NA : deck or keel?

2. Generate the final slope curve of the hull girder in loaded and lightship condition. Plot it in
EXCEL with labels and units.
3. Generate the final deflection curve of the hull girder in loaded and lightship condition. Plot it in
EXCEL with labels and units. Is it a hog or a sag?
4. What are the bending stresses at the deck plate and at the keel plate? Does it exceed the yield
tensile stress of mild steel (250 MPa)? If the maximum bending stress (at deck or keel) is the
working stress, what is the safety factor?

5. Fig.2 shows the quarter-length section, where the shear force is likely to be the maximum. Find
the Shear stress distribution 𝜏(𝑧) from the deck to the keel at this station. Find the horizontal
neutral axis NA of this section. Find the second moment of area of cross section about this NA.
Where is the shear stress zero at this section? Where is the shear stress maximum at this section?
What is the maximum magnitude of the shear stress? Does it exceed the yield shear stress of mild
steel (125 MPa)?
