1.a Draw and explain T ‐ H diagram of a pure substance by taking water as an 10
example.
1.b 1 kg of superheated steam at 1.5 MPa contains 300 kJ of heat energy. 10
Find the superheated temperature. If 500 kJ of heat energy is removed at
the same pressure, what is the condition of the steam? The specific heat
of superheated steam, Cps = 2.25 kJ kg‐1 K‐1.
2.a Define lubricants. Describe the mechanism of hydrodynamic lubrication. 10
2.b Explain the mechanism of setting and hardening of cement. 10

1.a A dove tail key way is to be milled in a machine component. Explain with 10
neat sketch the suitable process needed.
1.b A high‐speed race bike has a piston diameter 40 mm and stroke 100 mm. 10
The mean effective pressure is 4 bar and the speed is 2500 rpm. The
diameter of the brake drum is 1 m and the effective brake load is 400 N.
Find indicated power, brake power and friction power. Assume that
mileage of the bike is not a concern; however, the bike should have high
pick up and power.
2.a Explain the working of 4 stroke petrol engine with a neat sketch and 10
thermodynamic graph
2.b The driven pulley of 400 mm diameter of a belt drive runs at 200 rpm. 10
The angle of lap is 165° and the coefficient of friction between the belt
and pulley is 0.25. Find the power transmitted if the initial tension is not
to exceed 10 kN.

1.a Find the current through the galvanometer G in the Wheatstone bridge 10
shown in figure. Assume galvanometer resistance to be 5 Ω.
1.b An electric train is powered by machine which takes the supply from 220 10
V DC rail running above the train throughout. Machine draws current of
100 A from the DC rail to account for high torque during starting and runs
at 700 rpm initially. Calculate the new speed of the train once it picks up
the speed where the torque output required is only 70% of starting
torque.
2.a When a certain inductive coil is connected to a dc supply at 240V, the 10
current in the coil is 16A. When the same coil is connected to an ac supply
at 240V, 50 Hz, the current is 12.27A. Calculate (i) resistance, (ii)
impedance, (iii) inductance and (iv) the inductance of the coil. If the
supply is were to be altered to 60 Hz at 240V, then what happens to the
current?
2.b List the advantages of 3 phase ac systems over single phase ac systems. 10
