NATIONAL DIPLOMA 1 -2017/2018 SESSION

Date: 11th February, 2019.
SECOND SEMESTER EXAMINATION QUESTIONS.
Course Title: Electric Machine I.
Course Code: EEC 123
Credits Unit: 3
Department: Electrical Electronics Engineering Technology,
Time: 2hrs. 30 mins.
Instructions: Attempt any five (5) questions. All questions Carry equal marks.
a. What is an auto transformer?

b. List four (4) uses of an auto transformer

c. A 5KVA 2300/230V 50Hz transformer was tested for iron loss with normal
excitation and copper losses at full load and these were found to be 40w
and 112w respectively. Calculate the efficiency of the transformer at 0.8PF
for the following KVA output.
a. 1.25 b. 7.5 c. 6.25 d. 5.0
d. A 100KVA lighting transformer has a full load loss of 3KW, with the
losses being equally divided-between iron and copper. During a
day, the transformer operates on full load for 3 hours, one half load
for 4 hours, the output being negligible for the remainder of the day.
Calculate the allday efficiency.

2. a. What is an induction motor?

b. A single phase, 50Hz core type transformer has square cores of
20cm side. The permissible flux density in the core is 1.0wb/m 2 .
Calculate the number of turns per limbs on the high and low voltage
sides for a
3000/220V ratio. To allow for insulation of stamping, assume the net iron
length to be 90 by gross iron length .
c. A slip ring induction motor runs at 290 r.p.m at fuli ioad when connected
to 50Hz supply. Determine the number of poles and slips.
3. a. The no load current of a transformer is 5A at 0.25 power factor
when supplied at 235V, 50Hz. The number of turns on the primary
winding is 200. Calculate:

The core loss iii. The magnetizing
component

b. What is ideal transformer?

c. In a 25KVA, 2000/200V single phase transformer, the iron
and full load copper losses are 350 and 400 respectively. Calculate the
efficiency of unit power factor on:
i. Full load
ii. Half load
4. Find the all day efficiency of 500KVA distribution transformer whose
copper loss and iron loss at full load are 4.5Q'V and 3.5KW
respectively. During a day of 24 hours it is loaded as follows:
